Certainly a beautifully figured piece of Elm and now with a wonderfully designed shape. Well done, Huw, it's gorgeous! I'm sure they will love it, I do! 😊 Phil
Thank you Phil, I will find out eventually ad the person who ordered this piece is giving it as a gift to someone. I'm really happy that I have a similar piece as well still to turn. Take care my friend and thanks for lovely comment. Cheers, Huw
I would not have guessed there was such a beautiful piece of wood there Huw. The shape and the finish brought it all out. Well done my friend! Hwyl, Gary
Thanks Gary, I thought it would look good from what I could see on the edge of the blank but the end result was better than I could have imagined. Take care my friend. Hwyl, Huw
Wow! Beautiful. Turning that on a worm screw without the tail stock sure had me on the edge of my seat. Just a thought, you can use cut up t-shirts in place of paper towels, it leaves far fewer fuzzies. You probably already knew that, you are a smart cookie.
Thanks Amy, I feel very comfortable turning a 12" by 2" on a worm screw, any larger than 12" and I would use a face plate or face plate ring. I do have small pieces of cloth which I sometimes use but just didn't for some reason. Thanks for the compliment and take care Amy. Cheers, Huw
Love the grain in that! Beautiful work Huw. Apologies for the delay in commenting. Watched it a while ago, but now trying to catch up on my watched watchlist with comments.
Thanks John, It was a commission and the customers were really pleased as they wanted a piece with nice grain and 12" in diameter. The choice of wood was left to me.
Thanks Mike, The visible bits on the face of the platter are actually burrs rather than knots and were a nice surprise for them to stay there after turning. Take care my friend. Cheers, Huw
@@WoodenItBeNice Haha, the joke's on me -when I hear 'burr' I think of a velcro-like seed pod that clings to clothing. dog fur, and the like. I guess I wasn't paying attention enough to realize it means 'burl' in your neck of the woods. No matter, still a really nice piece ! 👍😎
Hahaha, Sorry Mark but it was a bit warm, got to 92 F in the workshop when I turned this one by the end. Glad you like it as it is partly down to you from last year. Take care mate. Cheers, Huw
Thanks Bruce, I'm so happy with the finish on this one. The grain is beautiful and luckily I have another piece of it as well. Take care my friend. Cheers, Huw
Thanks Tim, I really like the finish as well and I put it down to Hampshire Sheen's Finishing Academy. I learned so much from that on line course. Take care Mate. Cheers, Huw
Thanks Grahame, It was nice to turn one at last. The grain is amazing and I also have another piece very similar to this one. Take care mate and have fun in France. Cheers, Huw
What a beautiful piece of elm Huw, you certainly did it justice, the commissioner must be well pleased with it. I just niticed that I wasn't subscribed but now remedied.
@@WoodenItBeNice awww yes thank you buddy, I been getting nervous when the camera is switched on but I will soon. Glad that your backs ok for you to be turning, take care Huw! 😃
I actually remembered it was Thursday today ! There's some lovely grain in that elm and the knot didn't seem to cause too many problems. Wondering what the client has in mind for it.
Thanks Myk, The grain is very nice and I was surprised the knot didn't give me any issues. Before I knew it, it had been turned away. The client wants to give as gift to someone. Take care my friend. Cheers, Huw
Thanks Conor, My back is ok but still having good and bad days. Shouldn't be much longer before I get to see a physio in a hospital for some help. Take care mate. Cheers, Huw
That is one beautiful bowl. I have loads of old seasoned french oak and chestnut from projects in France. Maybe one day if you have time I can commission something from you........
Thanks Bram, I'm so happy how this came out and the person who bought it has decided to keep it for herself and asked be to do another bowl for her to give as a gift. Yes a huge amount of our home grown Elm has disappeared. I bought 2 pieces from Axminster so still have one to play with. Take care Bram and we'll speak soon. Cheers, Huw
in our club when a demo was done on the platters you can get pine edge glued 5/8" x 12" round platters for under $7 at a box store which is a great way to practice platters cheaply and once painted or stained no one needs to know it was pine.
Thanks PP, Thanks very much. I've always thought if you can turn Pine you can turn most woods. Thanks for watching and taking the time top comment, really appreciated. Take care. Cheers, Huw
Lovely piece of elm and nicely turned 👍 one question are these type of bowls/platters for decorative purposes or functional? I’ve never turned one and my offerings always tend to look like pudding dishes 😂 Cheers Steve
Thanks Steve, I believe that this style is more decorative than practical as the bowl section is quite small in comparison to the overall size. Next week is definitely a practical one. Take care mate. Cheers, Huw PS Hopefully in the next few weeks I'll be using some carving chisels you brought back to life for me.
