Woodturning a Green Apple Bowl, a Natural Edged Indulgence

Woodturning an apple wood crotch into a very thin walled and natural edged bowl. A guilty pleasure? Maybe, but it's certainly an indulgence. I don't turn green wood very often.
The destination is worthy, the journey is what it's all about sometimes, and for me this is one of those times.
I'm shutting down my woodworking page on Facebook, but you can still find me there on my personal page. I'm not very active there, but I'll be using it to showcase my work as well as others that I enjoy.
email me at rhumphrey.woodworking@gmail.com
or mail me something the nice old fashioned way:

Thanks for watching!

Thank you for the turn and the words. My mother left on her final journey this week, It my fervent prayer that she and my dad have met up and are dancing away as they sure did love to dance.together. Green wood is such a treat and very hard to find here. It can give you quite the bath and I do love the pile of shavings. Blessings of the season on your house.

Tara, I'm very sorry for your loss! I pray they both have found peace in the arms of our Savior, and their dance is now one of pure joy! There is peace to be found in making shavings too, and I hope you start turning again soon

Thank you for your kind words. Dad left us 30 years ago, Mom waited very patiently for him and was ready to join him. I pray it is a dance of joy as well and they are also cuddling my daughter as she has been an angel for many years.

I'm not a turner myself, but admire the process and the product very much. Your calm, logical, but passionate, narration makes your work stand out among the others I watch. I get the same feeling when piecing a quilt: the process is more important than the product, though both have great value. It's the process that does it for me- the product will hopefully please others.

Rod there was so much about that video that I liked. Apple has its own unique beauty. And I agree that turning green wood is so different than a dry piece. Those shavings are amazing. I enjoyed watching yours as much as doing it myself. LIstening to you describe your passion for what you are doing is inspiring. Also when turning a crotch bowl you just never know what you are going to see before you get turning. Lots of surprises. I am just finishing a piece of redwood that had 10 branches coming out of it. I talk about how it is like exploring an area you have never seen before. It so exciting and gratifying to see the beauty emerge right before you eyes. Thank you for your wonderful videos and have a Merry Christmas Gary

I'm going to check your channel now to see the follow-up (I hope there is one). I've been turning since July this year (2019) and I've recently acquired some logs from a fallen birch tree. Birch has little or no figure to offer but it is bliss to turn green. I've turned a small natural edge bowl which, so far, is holding out okay and I've turned a goblet, which has distorted delightfully (it appears to be drunk despite never having had any alcohol in it. Clearly, green birch just can't hold its liquor). I didn't know about putting it in a bag with fresh shavings so thank you for that tip. I'll try that. I'm definitely with you on the 'journey/destination' thing. The end result is just a by-product of the experience of creating it... and that's the part that can't be shared. For all its inherant problems, turning green rocks! Love your apple bowl. I'm now off to your channel to see if there's an update yet. Thanks for sharing.

I already know that it can warp or change its form during the drying process. I am not astonished when green wood is so wet. I have read that a tree pumps quite a few thousands of littes/day through its stem and branches. It is like a giant but quiet water pumping station with so much more functions. Bird sanctuary. Giving us coolness and shade in the heat of the summer. Feeding birds and other creatures of nature. But I am kinda worried. I havent seen a fresh video from you in a while although I subscribed and have the bell activated. I hope you are doing well. Please stay healthy Rod. Warm greetings from Germany. And I love to see all your videos since your comments are always so nice and I always learn something from them - although I am not a wood turner. But I love trees. To see the grain and colours is always so nice. My special moment is the finish when the oil or shine juice is put on and the wood seems to spring back to life in all its glory. I also like your poems a lot and you reading them to us.

Beautiful work Rod. I love turning green wood, it is such a pleasure as you said. I don’t turn enough of it however. Most of my turning is dry wood. The first time I turned a piece of green wood it was a piece of cherry that was about 6” in diameter and I did some spindle work with it. I remember it being such a joy that I just kept turning till I basically had a tooth pick with a large handle lol. Love your videos and your work. Great work again

Thank you, Rod, for another superb video. There can be few greater gifts to a woodturner than an apple tree or indeed any fruit tree. I don't know if you follow Carl Jacobson but a few months ago he received a tip about filling a green bowl with dried rice grains to speed up the drying process. I seem to remember he stirred the grains about once a week and the process worked. The same grains of rice can be used over and over again. Semper Fi, Alan.

Thanks very much, Alan! I do, I'm a subscriber of Carl's from way back and he's had a great influence on me. I did watch some of that process and it seemed very positive. Maybe next time...I have it in my noggin to not open that bag until June now, lol Semper Fi

You said at the end what I was thinking...About the bowl being thin...I hope it doesn't crack because THAT would be an Amazing M&M bowl!

I hope it's just as pretty in June. I was struck by how much the shavings look like the long strips of apple my grandfather used to carve from the fruit when I was a child.

Me too...we shall see! It did look like apple peels!

The feel, the sound, the look, and often the smell of green wood is nearly addictive. The bowl *will* warp; that's just an opportunity to do a lot of hand sanding :-) It will most probably crack; that's just an opportunity to repair with bow ties, leather laces, or copper wire stitches... Clyde

That should warp real nice. I love green wood. Although that green white oak I turned a few weeks back was like turning rock. Lol. I look forward to seeing the final bowl. Ken
