Woodturning a log into a live edge, or natural edge bowl. Beautiful black walnut is on the lathe in this week’s video. I’ve had this log on a shelf in my garage for 12 years! Its time has finally come. ..

I am fortunate to have neighbors with large Black Walnut trees. I am also unfortunate to have neighbors with black walnut trees that flank my back yard. Fortunate that they happily gift me free wood. Unfortunate that they also give me free walnuts. Those little buggers hide in the grass while mowing and will twist an ankle every time. Fortunately, the wood is nice to turn bowls, hollow vessels, and platters. Even made some nice spoons from several branches that also fall into my yard. I do make them something for the wood they give me. I have noticed that it can be fractured easily on the lathe but is a solid piece once turned. As you have so demonstrated on this stunning bowl. Well done Marine, just incredible. From one veteran to another, Aim High...

LOL, yes indeed, a blessing and a curse! The squirrels sure love them. I do too, but they're a real pain to crack open. Wonderful wood to work with though. I've got a few loved ones in the Air Force. Semper Fi!

I have always been using Black Walnut in many of my wood working jobs. I have also sawmilled many Black Walnut logs on my sawmills in upstate New York. Living in South Carolina now but will be moving back up north this fall. Great Bowl, my first bowl I am working on now is Ambrosia Maple.

Another beautiful bowl with gorgeous grain and tones. Its final shape is very interesting and attractive, too. Your videos are top quality with good lighting, composition and audio that displays your techniques very well. I'm a photographer hobbyist (60+ years) so I recognize good work. I also second "any Caliber"s" comments. You are a wonderful teacher to us. Your humble style and explanations are especially pleasing and appealing. You make turning look so easy which is the mark a true artist and craftsman. Thanks for your service from another vet (USAF 1963-67).

What I like most about your videos is that, as I am very new to woodturning, you explain your rational as you go along and include tool selection. That is a treamendous help for us newbies. Added to that, you take the odd upset on the chin, I know as a design opportunity, (I have had a few lol) and move on to produce a stunning piece, one you should be extreemely proud of.. I would be. Thank you so much for your chanel, your easy manner of instruction and with such a laid back easy presentation, your inspire others to try and boost confidence . Wishing you and your family a great Christmas and Happy New Year.

I do enjoy watching the turning presentations. I have a maple burl drying after a tree fell last fall. I have a cherry burl that will be coming off the tree this coming Monday. My father was a wood shop teacher and taught me to turn years ago. I'm trying to get the time back to start turning on the lathe again. I need to watch some more videos on turning to bring back what I've forgotten. I'm starting out with easy turning activities and then building up to the more difficult challenges.

Haven't read all the comments but as far as I went I was surprised that no one caught that you save that beautiful walnut from the fire. The reason I say that is you shouldn't burn walnut it gives off toxic fumes. Ever noticed that very few plants will grow around a walnut. Semper Fi for my son (20) and Aim High for me (4.5).

Very very nice Rod. Here in Alabama, we don't find any walnut laying around and it is a great wood to work with. As for the Ack's pastes, I would like to add that not only is it a great product, and I have purchased it a number of times, but that the people are extremely honest and reputable. They care about quality and customer satisfaction. A product and company that you should have no scruples about "supporting" in any way you choose. Thanks again for your quiet, straightforward and artistically educational presentation. Andrew
