I have been woodturning now for about 5 weeks and I thought I would try to make something for my boys, who both like Harry Potter! I also wanted to try out my new carbide tools. They were effective, but did leave a very rough finish. I am glad I spent so much time practicing with the skew chisel at the start of my journey as this quickly cleaned them up.
I made two wands and made mistakes on each, but learnt a lot from both projects, so time well spent as far as I'm concerned.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy the video - let me know in the comments which wand you think is best. Oh and if you could hit the like button and subscribe to the channel that would mean a lot to me - thank you.

Ben's Got Wood
A bit about me - my name is Ben and this channel is documenting my very first attempts at woodturning. As a beginner, I'm eager to explore the art of shaping wood into beautiful, functional pieces through the mesmerising process of woodturning.
Through trial and error, I'm learning valuable lessons and gaining insights that will shape my skills. If you are a seasoned woodturner, I'd appreciate any help and guidance along the way - I know I have a lot to learn!
Join me as I embark on this adventure. Don't forget to like, subscribe, and hit the notification bell to stay updated on my woodturning journey.
Here are some of my videos so far! - • Woodturning - Shedding...
Thank you for being a part of this incredible experience!
Please note my videos are for entertainment purposes only and are not meant as instructional videos. I am not a professional woodturner and some of the techniques I use are trial and error and probably not correct - in fact I'm surprised I still have all my fingers! I hope you enjoy the videos!

Interesting projects. Can I suggest that you have the tool rest closer to the work, the amount of tool overhang is not in your favour. Nothing wrong with carbide tools, they have their place and it is surprising what you can achieve with just those 4 tools, also you don’t need all the traditional sharpening equipment required for using gouges. The carbide cutters can be easily resharpened on a 600 flat diamond plate and some WD 40, reducing the initial setup outlay costs considerably. Greetings from Tasmania Australia, home of fantastic woods for the wood turner.👍😁🇦🇺

Thank you for the advice - it all definitely helps. It’s also great to know you are from Australia, this is one of things I love about RU-vid - connected me with people from other distant lands. As an aside, I have one of your Banksia Nuts here that I am soon to turn, so I’ll be posting that up shortly! Thanks again for your support and advice. Take care ☺️

I think the second one is best - despite the crack at the base.

Yeah I was hoping you wouldn’t see that! It was a lot more delicate than I thought! 😂

Take your carbide tools and throw them in the nearest skip and you will be a better turner immediately

I know what you’re saying, and I was in two minds when I got them, but for a new turner they can be useful I feel. I am definitely committed to learning how to use traditional chisels but feel carbides do have a place too. Thanks for the feedback though. It’s all very useful as I learn this new hobby.
