In the last few weeks I have been working on a segment vase on the theme of Achilles & Penthesilea from the myths of the Trojan War. The turning was quick compared to the production. I used ash as the main wood and the oak was only smoked. This means that the ammonia was only in the container with the oak for a short time, which is how I achieved the dark effect at the segment transitions. The second feature ring is drilled out with a Forstner bit and a leftover piece of amaranth is cast in at an angle with epoxy resin.
