Thank you Jack! It was my first attempt at a crotch vase, I keep hunting now for a triple or a quad crotch. Stay tuned more to come :) Either way, thank you soo much for the support!!
Thank you for the support, I'm glad you liked the piece. After doing that one I've been hunting for a three or maybe even a four branch crotch. Cant wait to try it!
Well hard to believe how do you made that piece of the wood look very nice job very cool word above watching TV whatever you can I appreciate it so much God bless you and thank you
Duka Heritage It’s my pleasure. I’ve learned quite a bit watching this video. I just started turning and now I’m scrounging for wood. If I may, do you think you might do a tutorial on the different tools you’re using? And when to use them. Thanks for your hard work and for replying. Cheers!
This is an excellent idea and I will add it to my list of video inspiration to put to good use in the future! Thanks again for being a part of my adventures in the shop!
Thank you so much James, it's not too bad for my first go at a crotch vase; but I have a much bigger piece of black walnut in line to try this type of project again :)
I liked the overall design of the vase and I believe you mentioned that was the first of that type for you. Well, you did a great job! I just subscribed to your channel, mainly because you seem like a decent guy and I try to always try to back the small businesses , or channels when I can. I don't mean to be nit-picky, but(and you know there's always a but), most turners that I know or follow would much rather hear the lathe, turned down when editing, or really rather hear you doing a voiceover while you're fast forwarding through the turning, telling everyone what you are doing, how and/or where you got the wood or whatever. To me personally, I don't care for music or any kind in the turning videos, even if I love the music. Not criticizing, simply one person's opinion. Cheers, Paige C.
I like your design. I would have made the wings a little thinner, though. (Your wood - your choice :-) ) The finish was interesting. How long did the finish take to complete? Nice job!
I'm with you on the proportions, taller would have worked too, and while I get your sprouting seed idea, the base does seem a little small (height and width) for the size of the wings...altogether a beautiful piece with very nice finish. Acoustics, hmm... I wonder if you could turn a mean drum out of a stump of ash? (Of course, I have no experience with woodturning so could not even begin to do this myself) Constructive criticism re music/machine/voice, music is out of balance (too loud), kept having to turn up volume to hear your voice.
Hi Kath, thank you for your support and input. I have since gotten better with my editing/ sound balancing. What a learning curve it has been. I really want to try another one of these, I'm holding onto a walnut crotch but its a bit too green yet. I find myself looking for a triple crotch now also, i think that will be fun.
:) Thank you, I'm glad you like the layout. Learning as I go with the video thing, but I try my best to be just me and express that through the videos.
I like your turning but I would like to know what speed you did at different points of your turning. I wish that all turners would show the speed at which you turn though out the turning. Anyway great job.
Thank you for the support. My lathe is not a digital motor type so I'm unsure of exact rpm. With a piece like this, it is critical to get the speed up as much as possible, while maintaining stability; to ensure you have no catches with the wings as they develop. I typically only use slower speeds while I'm roughing a piece out into balance, or if there is intrinsic imbalance in the wood itself. Also slower for sanding :) hope this helps.
Thank you for your input. I agree, i think the piece would have flowed a bit better if i had a longer piece to start with. Nonetheless I'm happy with my first attempt :)
The iron was a gift from my wife to help encourage me to move forward with my turning. She picked it up at brandingirons.com and made sure to let me know that they were very helpful with her design. Hope this helps :)
