Making A Cane Sword
In this video I made a Bocote and Walnut cane sword. It's about 35" long, this was a fun project I've never turned a cane before.

Hi my name is Carl Jacobson,
I started woodworking with my grandfather as a young boy. I continued woodworking through high school, and started woodturning after seeing a turned project in a friends shop. Some of my fondest memories are working with my grandfather in his wood shop. Being able to share our passion for woodturning and woodworking, ties it all together. We do a lot of epoxy projects as well as woodturning.

Came out really nice. I have (and use) a sword cane from Cold Steel. The only thing I'd mention, is that anyone wanting to possibly make, use or sell one, they should know their local laws first. Sword cane's in many states are specifically illegal and are considered a concealed dangerous weapon. Love your work, look forward to the next one!Cheers

I’m recently disabled, I’m 36 years old and would love a cane made by you!!! Truly amazing!!!
@edanthony4131

Great looking piece as always. I did mine a little different. Because I do have a concealed carry permit, I made mine with the bottom of the cane being the handle for the blade, and put the same size steel in the handle (made like a "T" on top) and it becomes a "type of hammer" to use both to strike and defend with. Also my lathe is not long enough to turn a 36 or 37 inch piece so I turn a 28" piece and then make a special "foot" for the bottom that actually makes a good sword handle. When it passes through a metal detector it all appears to be just a re-enforced walking stick. I am a disabled veteran and do have to use it, but I will not list here how many places I have gone using it, and never been stopped. BTW, you were my first watch turner/teacher even before I bought my first lathe. Thanks for all I have learned from you over the years.

Nice piece of work Carl. That is a very nice piece of Bocote. Beautiful grain and color. Yes the tip does need some sort of protective tip or feral. This is a great start to 2020. Thank you for sharing.

I took one through the scanners at Orlando International Airport (heading back to the UK) in March 2002 with no problems. Mind you, it was in my hold luggage along with a battery pack I'd made for my (then) up-to-date straight to DVD camcorder. I still have both and have since made another sword cane with a solid brass handle and a copper 'cane'. Neither see much use due to UK laws on such things. Nice to have in the house ... just in case!

Many people have pointed out the illegality of such an object in most parts of the world, merely owning it is illegal where I live.. Your cane is a lovely piece of work, and I enjoyed watching it being made. However to avoid attention from prying eyes the shaft should be of smaller diameter, most antique sword canes contain a short rapier or other stabbing weapon. It also shouldn't rattle. Both are giveaways to anyone paying attention.
