Bravo; Deep hollowing needs new approaches; to the right tools for the job. The use of Tool-bits is definitely a new approach - as we can see - a positive results!!

You are my new wood turning hero! I have been wanting a hollowing jig for sometime now even though I’m a beginner but I didn’t want to lay out 500 smackers for it and this looks so doable that I must make the attempt to build my own jig and tools. Also the mandrel idea that you had for turning off the bottom of the vase was amazing. So simple yet effective. I am very impressed! I am so glad I found this video. Keep up the good work my man!

Couple of things. I noticed a white knuckle grip on the deep hollow chisel. No loose finger, graceful guiding of the chisel for this one! I'm really glad you put the caption under the segment when you installed the grub screws. Grub screws are a little known fastener/clamp that not many people know about. Oh, and it's a beautiful turning. Looks like it would sit in the center of a spindle leg entrance table, maybe book matched rosewood veneer top. The turning filled with rose pedals. To bad I don't have any money. Best regards, young man. Best regards.

Thats just what i need....found a bit of tool steel at work got a bit of pipe and thats Saturday morning sorted....i made my own carbide tools (nothing new there everyone's doing it easy wood far to expensive) I'm looking for someone with a mill to make bowl gouges ....lathes are relatively cheap the tools will cost you....cheers Chris

Just put a dimple in the tool bar for the grub screws to sit in-even a spot of Loctite or CA glue to stop vibration working them loose. This method keeps the handle smooth without nuts and bolts. Just a thought. I do a lot of metal machining, made my own Carbide wood turning tools for a bit of fun.

I did end up shimming the bar into the tube and bolting straight through, it is now rock solid. If you are interested I made further improvements. Here's a timed link ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NoXdPA9-93g.html Thank you for watching and for your comments! 😊

Excellent video - I've watched this so many times. Going to make something similar as my lathe is also a similar size to yours. Some questions about lengths. You show the steel rod protruding 20" so I guess that bit was approx 24" in total. Plus the handle looks about 36in ??. Then your wood and steel plate trap. How much swing from centre line to back do you have ??, Id guess at 24in so that you can angle the shaft/handle to get under the shoulders of hollow forms. TIA

Hi Phil. Firstly check out this video on some upgrades I made. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NoXdPA9-93g.html The upgraded tool is 62" long and the Rod protrudes 18". The keep is 22" and the offset from centre to back is 16". Hope this helps you, any other questions just ask. Good look! 😊

Hi Martin ,Could you tell me what gauge steel you used for the scraper and what grade steel used for the cutting profile ,thanks Damien
@MartinWoodhead

Not sure about the grade for the Scraper Damien, but it is HSS. For the hollower I used M35. 😊

@@MartinWoodhead Thank you, that takes care of one part. I was interested in your design for the wood handle guide at about 4:41 in the video on the right side and again at 5:04 on left side of the screen. I've seen different versions, mostly of metal and was interested to see what you put together. Just watched another vid of yours, the elm crotch? ....I think that was the title, anyway, great vid and I enjoy seeing you implementing different methods of attaching blanks to the lathe. Also, love that lathe you have ....looks like a beast :)

@@MartinWoodhead such as great idea, I will need to try that out. I've recently started turning and was struggling quite a bit with catches when trying to hollow. got a proper gouge on the go and so much better. I was given a metal file that some one had modified into a scraper which has helped on the finishing cut, but I reckon I could try something like you have here to help even more. I take it the bar and the pipe were relatively cheap too???

I have question. I'm definitely not an expert having never turned anything on a wood lathe. But wouldn't it be better to put the set screw on the top of the cutting tool so that the force from the work piece pushed the tool into the larger surface of the drilled hole instead of pushing it into the set screw? Or maybe the set screw acts like a fulcrum to push the back end of the cutting tool against the deeper part of the hole? Or maybe it doesn't make a difference at all? Like I said, I'm no expert.
@MartinWoodhead
@MartinWoodhead 3 года назад
On earlier tools I have put the set screw on the top. So the downward force at the cutting edge is an upward force beyond the set screw, so it's constantly trying to work it's self loose. My thinking was put the set screw in the bottom, push the tool to the top and the force beyond the fulcrum increases when in use so it will not work loose. Seems to be working! Thanks for watching and for thinking about it. 😉
