Making a long stem pipe was one of the things I've wanted to do which gave me a push into woodturning, it's about time I'll show how I make one of these...

Thank you very much. I often wondered how you made such intricate. for lack of a better word, stems or arms for the pipe. I always thought it was one piece of wood. This really looks wonderful and I really do appreciate this. Thank you.🌹😇🌹😇💝🤣🌹

Smoking pipes is getting rare. 30 years ago, lots of people did it, i remember my grandfather with a pipe. Nowadays, its really rare with only a few old people still smoking pipe. Im not a fan of smoking at all, but a pipe has a lot more style than anything else. Your pipe is so nice that i can imagine how proud the owner would show it of. Very nice job. It reminds me a bit of the clay pipes that historically were produced in the town i was born, Gouda. Long stemmed clay pipes. I always liked that design.

Thank you Willem!! I know those pipes, I've seen a whole documentary about how they are made, interesting history as well! I also don't smoke a pipe, but I sure do love making them! I'll be showing a different type of pipe (different stem shape, different bowl shape, differen smoke channel design) soon enough. Yuval.

it's calling to you, it's only a matter of time. Get some black cherry tobacco and relax, remember not to inhale, in time move to a pipe tobacco with latakia in it and you'll never look back.

don't say you don't smoke just say that you lover pipes because that is the only part that matters

Pipe smoking is totally different from anything else, tobacco can smell nicer, cleaner - for many its an occasional treat not an addiction (at least i speak for me on that). When I moved to France - -did not bring my Peterson pipe - partly as I value it i dont want it broken in travel - thats how un-addicted I am, bought a new one locally now. It can be mellow - chill time, its is great for the rare thing of being in nature and tuning out from the modern world. Pipe smoking is not an addiction to me. Its very much better. Also many health benefits!! Waits for Censor! But sorry there is - The government cancer agenda against tobacco but - look at all the modern killer they promote - its just a form of mind control. We all die in the end. Be informed about RISK.

Hi Yuval! Excellent video my friend! I loved the whole process, the pipe bowl in olive is a beauty and it was really interesting how you dealt with the stem! I am not a smoker, but if I were, I would love to smoke in a pipe just like that! I am sorry to ask, but I am completely ignorant in this subject. Does the pipe bowl need a special treatment or it just gets burned in the inside when smoking? I bet the stem gave you its good deal of work with the shaping and sanding but the piece is a work of art! My congratulations! Cheers! Daniel
@yuvallahav
@yuvallahav 7 лет назад
Thank you Daniel!! I don't normally smoke a pipe, but these are so fun to make :) To answer your questions, professionally made pipes get scorched before they leave the artisan, so they are smoking ready, while this pipe can be smoked right up, but until there will be a layer of char on the bowl walls the smoke will taste a little woody (which some people actually like). Some people use watered down honey soaked on the inner walls of the pipe for the first few smoking, as the thin honey will penetrate the wood and then caramelize inside it as it burns, which will give the wood resistance and better taste. The stem took me about 25 minutes to shape using the dremel, which is a grand improvement on the 2 hours it normally takes me when I use rasps. Yuval.
@clydeulmer4484

Cool project, Yuval. I never even thought about making a pipe... A tip, which you are of course free to disregard :-) Use a wooden handscrew clamp (two wood jaws, two screws in opposite directions running through threaded pivots in the jaws; the jaws can be tightened non-parallel) to hold stuff on the drill press and bandsaw. I've accumulated a bunch over the years, and modified them by drilling holes through the centerline so that each jaw has a half-circle cutout or by making "V" notches in the jaws at right angles to or along the length. I can firmly clamp about anything with them. Clyde
@yuvallahav
@yuvallahav 8 лет назад
Thank you Clyde, I've been meaning to make some of those clamps for a while now, I'll download some plans and make some, hopefully by the next time I have a project that needs drilling. Yuval.

When the stem heats up and the glue vapours from the heat. Perhaps a more old fashioned layer of horse hide glue. Or tie stainless steel wires to a trees branches. The result, custom non split pipe stems. My grandfather used to make and carve his own pipes.

That is a great idea, I will try to use it for the next pipe! Yuval

This is a beautiful pipe. Very nicely made. I am sure it must be a pleasure to smoke it with a good tobacco.

Thank you Johan! I did smoke it a little, using simple tobacco, and it was very pleasurable. I should be getting a decent pipe tobacco and have a real go at it. People who smoked pipes I've made told me they were just perfect for them :) Yuval.

Love it, cunning way to make the stem too. Am still waiting for the comedy smoke ring finale.... :-)

Thank you Dave! Couldn't light it on camera, you know how many people will write to me if I will? Probably more then if I would have made a knife and stabbed someone with it to show how it works... :) Yuval.

I’ve just been going thru some old saved videos and came across a couple of your pipe vids. I’ve been wanting to make a wizard pipe for some time now. I’m going to give it a shot. I need to refocus on wood working. Too much crap going on right now if you catch my drift. Cheers

I plan on giving it a try. Wish I had easy access to some nice olive wood bigger than a pen blank. Sadly, it is difficult to find at a reasonable price here in southern California.

Well, there are many alternative woods for pipes, while the "best" wood for the job is Briar root (which is expensive since it's rare and comes mostly from the south of Italy, a small single piece could run you up 20-100 dollars), while alternative woods are many, among them are Cherry, Olive and Walnut. Between you and me, the Olive looks the best, but the Walnut taste the best when you smoke it (and the first couple of smokes will always have wood taste, until the inside of the bowl is well charred, while professional pipes come pre charred).

Thanks for the info. Had no idea. Will have to give the Walnut a try: got plenty of that. The oak you used for the stem, did you just get some veneers? How did you get them so thin?
@yuvallahav
@yuvallahav 8 лет назад
I had a plank of Oak, about 5 cm tall (2 inches) and 20 cm wide (some more inches) and I cut a piece of it 30 cm long (about 12 inches) and I started slicing it in 2 mm wide slices on my table saw using my sled, risking my life and fingers in the process... if I had a bandsaw it would have been much simpler. If you can get a thin (but not too thin) veneer slices, use those, why not!

Awesome Video! I woud like to know if the is another method to shape a long hollow piece of wood, for instance if the used piece is not that flexible.

Thank you! There are a few more methods for making the stem, like a hollow branch and then steam bend it to shape, but I don't know which plants have those hollow branches, I bet a google search will help you find anything local that might fit the job. I also know of people who hand carve their stems in two halves and glue them together after they carved out the track in the stem... Yuval.

this is awesome, I am going to have to try this one out. I have about 1000 pounds of olive in the back yard drying out, I H many pieces well enough to do some of this on.

@yuvallahav 7 лет назад
Thank you Wolvsbain! Don't say you have so much Olive, someone reading this comment might hit you up for some, people are quite keen on getting some Olive where it's scarce or not to be found at all. I'm sure you'll enjoy creating those pipes, it's always a nice project to take your mind off things :) Yuval.

Its not too scarce in Arizona, every developmet uses it for a shade tree, so they are everywhere, same with red gum eucylptus.
