A stunning pen John and ergonomic too! I thought you was going to turn a trapped ring on the pen when you was shaping the bead near the top of the pen! But a beautiful figure in the oak, thanks for sharing. Cheers Andy
The pen turned out really nice, top job, I really enjoyed watching it take shape. Would mounting your copper wire in an old hacksaw handle help save your fingers from burns?
Go by a music store that services guitars and they probably give or sell you a set of uses guitar strings, The work GREAT for burning and provide different sizes for different widths burns... John D in Tennessee
Much more economical than kits and we are not locked in. We can be as creative as we wish. John, is it difficult replacing the refills by using small pliers?
If you have a long enough 5/32" bit they go in and come out easily with fingers. If the hole is only 1/8" then you will need pliers. The pens are usually lost before they run out of ink. :)
I got his full name spelled wrong, it’s actually Woody Hyezmar, who was about to sell his collection of woodworking plans but now is giving it for free on his website!
A roughing gouge is a concave shape, the same thickness from side to side. Think of a wide skew chisel ground square and bent over a piece of pipe. A spindle gouge is made of round bar with a channel ground out of it. It is thicker in the center of the edge, and the sides are much thinner. I don't own a roughing gouge. I prefer to rough with a skew. I hope my explanation makes sense.
The skew is my favorite and most used tool because it's so versatile. Any tool will work but I'm used to reaching for a skew first. On very small coves I use a spindle gouge.
