Woodturning Project - How To Make A Segmented Yin Yang Platter

I turned this classic Yin Yang design using Maple, Walnut. I segmented the Maple, and Walnut using a bandsaw. I recessed the two dots with a forsten bit, after turning then. It's 14" in diameter, and about 1 1/2" thick. If you make one of these I'd really like to see it, you can always share your project on my website.

Welcome to my channel, I started woodworking with my grandfather as a young boy. I continued woodworking through high school, and started woodturning after seeing a turned project in a friends shop. Some of my fondest memories are working with my grandfather in his wood shop. Being able to share our passion for woodworking, ties it all together.

Yeah, you were probably getting some blade drift with those tighter curves! It looks amazing though and your Robust seems more than up to the task.

Slick project, Carl! I have a question about the Easy Wood tools you use now...it appears that all cuts will always be scraping cuts...don't you get a rough surface on spindle work, and tearout on the cross-grain on bowls?
@CarlJacobson
@CarlJacobson 9 лет назад
RickTurns Thanks Rick, I don't get anymore tear outs on bowls then I do with a bowl gouge. I use a spindle gouge most of the time for spindle work. Maybe I'll do a video on my Q&A channel showing the two tools cutting.

Strong work on the platter. I've been looking for some platter designs and I really like this one. Might have to give a similar concept a try. And I'm completely jealous of your Robust. I was talking to Brent about a year ago at a local symposium and was seriously kicking around the American Beauty. Ended up going with the Laguna 18/36 instead. Very happy with that lathe. Anyway, always enjoy your work!!!! Keep it up my friend.

making two at once would also give you much better seams. if you have two full rounds for each color, instead of half like you did here, then cut them out on the band saw using the stacking method you used here, the resulting cuts would always match exactly.

Wow, beautiful piece, Carl! Tricky with all those grains and inlays. I was puzzled by your comment about polyurethane not going over oils. I've had no problems. I rescue old furniture and refinish with Watco Danish Oil, dry overnight or 2 days, then put two coats of very thinned out Varathane Satin Polyurethane. I wipe off excess poly after 2-3 hrs to get a hand rubbed finish. Watco also makes a Lacquer finish for high gloss pieces. I have used Boiled Linseed Oil for my garden tools wood handles, finishing off with same Poly. With Linseed, you have to wait longer for it to dry out. I typically thin out my Linseed oil, or use fine Flaxseed oil (edible) for very fine pieces. All these oils take Polyurethane very well as long as they are properly dried before the Poly coat. Never tried mineral oil, and don't need to. So I am surprised to hear you say that you cannot coat Poly over oil. You can! Its my finish of choice on almost all my pieces.
@CarlJacobson
@CarlJacobson 6 лет назад
Thank you! I thank it might be the mineral oil. Mineral oil doesn't dry like Danish or Linseed oil.

Hi CarlThis is a really good project for anyone to produce and as usual your choice of material is first rate. Perhaps if it was done as a gift or a personal commission you could combine a photo of both lady and gentleman, where the eyes are, one on each side covered with clear resin and then turned down. Would then make it really personal to that couple. Just a thought. Kind regards David Muckle UK based turner.

I love the yin yang platter. When I cut them on the bandsaw my accuracy needed sanding. I sanded them together so they would mirror each other. But...they would not fit together because sanding changed their pattern and their ability to fit together. How do you bandsaw and then sand and don't mess up their ability to join together. Picture no CNC and just basic power tools. Thanks, Mike P.
@CarlJacobson
@CarlJacobson 9 лет назад
+Mike P I cut the Maple one out first, then used it as a pattern for the Walnut. Just try to be as accurate as possible, when you're cutting it out on the ban saw.
