Fantastic job!! I'm saving this for the skew chisel lesson/tips/tricks - you have quite the touch. Thanks for posting this. I have a set of old Witherby skew chisels of varying sizes that I got off Ebay and I am anxious to start using them. Thanks again. Scott

woodturner21. You're welcome! I also think you need an affinity with your material. I used to belong to the local club, we would get many new members who were retired metal machinists, after all, a lathe is a lathe, isn't it. Almost without exception they all left. One guy, I remember, produced the most wonderful machine to turn spheres, both solid and hollow. He enters some in the monthly competition. He got very upset when I told him they were very nice but they were not turning. I would rather see a thick, flat bottomed bowl that had been loved, than a mechanical perfect ball. These skills have to be cherished and kept alive, especially with almost everything been turned out by copy lathes and CNC. I know I went on a bit, but to me, we are loosing all our old craftsmen.

I enjoyed watching you work. You really seem to have a clear vision as you shape the pieces. I also like how you repeat design elements from the pedestal onto the finial, just at a smaller scale. Really ties it together well.

The more you can take off is the difference between amateur and detail oriented veteran. Your stuff doesn't look like dollar store crap, but like Tiffany! I've turned for around 40 years and yet have met only a few handful of turners that I consider true turners. Good work bro!!!

Loving your videos. Pure art in motion and has spurred me to try again with the skew! One question I have is about the chisel I've seen you use on this and other vids when you are turning side Grain (like the ear ring stands), I thought you were using a skew to get the size and shape but then saw the end and question myself. Is it a skew or a scraper? It looks like it is skewed, but has a scraper type edge? Huge thanks.
@woodturner21
@woodturner21 4 года назад
On facework I use a negative rake scraper not a skew. The edge is straight I think camera angles might be deceptive

Steve: Nice. Brilliant. What tool are you using there at various places, such as when you round the disks in the beginning? It looks like a wide bedan tool or a scraper, but the bevel is short for a bedan.
@woodturner21
@woodturner21 8 лет назад
It's a negative Rake scraper. 1" wide. I also grind the edges slightly this gives a small cutting area at the tip of the tool making it more versatile.
@paralogia
