To keep the dandelion from disintegrating, spray it lightly with a coat of varnish. The spray will penetrate the entire structure and lock it into place. I've made many paperweights in this manner. Thank you for sharing your awesome work.

I would say that if he casted it in resin first, like a dandelion paperweight, and then cast the paperweight in a new blank, then it should work... The problem was the pour...

I just stumbled onto this video almost two years after the fact, and I am in awe! I know it didn't work out as planned (I can't even guess how they set those puffs without them exploding!) but this pot is GORGEOUS!! The color against the burl is perfect, I love the shape, and I love how so many of your project fails still work out in the end. Great job, Nick!

Craft Klatch made a dandelion paper weight. she poured the resin into her mold first, then pushed the fluffy dandelion into it. the fluff stayed attached to the plant. It looked really cool.

@ScarAnrew

it looks quite good that way (lesser blue propaply?) but if you want the dandilion in form you must "coat" it first take clear spray glue (or hairspray) hold the spray upwoards and spray in the air (not directly on the feathers) turn the head until it is evanly coverd let it dry repeat the same prositure two or three times then you can drown it in resion
@koosh6876
@koosh6876 7 лет назад
ScarAnrew i used the same technique kinda when i was doing a rose i sprayed clear coat directly onto the rose then once it dried i drenched the sucker to the brim with resin

so im halfway through watching this and its amazing as always but ive come up with an idea i think could look real cool which is all the shavings you have laying around you should save for a few weeks and then once you have enough you could reuse those with a clear resin and make say a pot or bowl obviously depending on how long you wish to save this stuff up if indeed you do decide to i just think the different contrast of textires between bits of pencil and other woods and bits of old resin but all in shavings would look awesome anyway keep up the good work matey and i look forward to the next one already
@retropockystick

I bet if you sprayed some kind of adhesive or mod podge over the flower and tried to stiffen it you would be able to pour resin right over it without moving the delicate little seedlings! I would love to see you revisit this and create what you set out to create because even though this looks awesome and funky, your original idea sounded so cool!

Oooooohhh make a fire pot find a broken piece of wood ( your preference ) then use resen in 3 colors red orange and yellow put the resen in odd shapes let them set then cut them up a bit place all the resen bits on the broken wood and finally use clear resen to hold it all together ( no idea how it would look or what it would do just had this idea after watching the vid and just before bed)

I LOVE THIS! When you blow on a dandelion and make a wish all the seeds push to that side so I think it's a perfect representation!
@lisacupp8978
@lisacupp8978 6 лет назад
I think this is lovely. The way the seeds cluster to one side, it looks like you made a wish and blew them there. If you slowly lower the flower into the resin, the surface tension will break more easily and you won't have the upward "push" of the resin rising through the flower. But this is beautiful as it is.

I am an aerospace researcher, have worked with the dispersion of carbon nanotubes in aerospace grade epoxy resins...the nanotubes agglomerate very easily... similar to what u see with the florets... (Each single flower in a head of dandelion is called a floret...wiki) it's a very challenging and sophisticated process to prevent particles from accumulating on one side in resin... it's interesting to see the effect of resin on floret :) yes you have a viewership in the aerospace world too...I find your videos educational and satisfying! :)

I know I'm about a year late, but it reminds me of adventure. With the lid on, you look through it and the dandelion seeds look like clouds, the wood looks like mountainous islands, and then when you take the lid off it looks like a birds eye view of the sea. Very pretty "accident".

May I suggest a bit of light spraypainting with a clear spraycan of paint before pouring the resin. My dad used to get the large flowers that looked like dandelions that had gone to seed. And he would carefully spray paint them in various colours. The type of the plants he got here in Minnesota were the members of the Tragopogon family.

@glennmay6204
@glennmay6204 7 лет назад
An attractive pot. The wood is pretty and the lid internal colour and vista is quite something. I played it back a few times because of the way it caught the light in the video. I've no idea how one would avoid crushing a dandelion seed head. but perhaps sealing the base of each seed to the flower head with a very thin CA glue? Possibly. as a separate set item then dropped into the pot. The problem will always be the viscosity of the heavy liquid on something designed to explode on the puff of a breeze. Nice one all the same.

I wonder if lightly spraying the dandelion with some strong hold hairspray prior to putting it in the wood, would hold it together. Hair Spray works to stablize the Dandy lion. As with making Floral arrangements We use hair spray to keep Dandy lions and Cat Tails in one piece and that keeps them from fraying off. I would also add a light from inside the pot to make it shine bright and see the seed pods better :)

Bryan East As long as spraying does not make the seeds fly off ...
@bryaneast2513
@bryaneast2513 7 лет назад
I was thinking in terms of several light and gentle passes holding a spray not too close to the seed-head. If successful I suppose the density of the resin could still collapse the seed-head.
@Frogmood
@Frogmood 7 лет назад
i think using an eyedropper to put a few drops of super glue or something would be a good way to do it. that way you don't have to worry about the spray blowing the seeds off

I have watched a lot of tutorials on working with Dandelion Seeds and well... I have run into the same issue as you! I watched one where he stuck it directly into the Resin! Maybe try that next time. I would think hairspray would work as for as keeping it together, but... you still run into the issue of it coming apart with any sort of a gust of air! Good luck and keep up the amazing work! Look forward to many more videos!

That was the sturdiest Dandelion I had seen when it was being moved around, and I thought surely it won't keep that fortitude when the resin is poured. Maybe, using hairspray in fine layers, overall liberally and dried, would help it keep together for the poured resin.
