This video is a discussion of my design process in woodturning. For this discussion, I show the process I use to create some bud vase designs. It includes some helpful suggestions for getting started as well as working through design - treating it as an ongoing process rather than a one time shot. I hope y'all enjoy!

You have a natural talent not only for design but for teaching, as well. (I taught for 29 years). You are articulate, clear, and a good planner. Excellent "lesson plan!"

Ashley, you are a piece of work! Lol. Great name for a woodturner. Is it a chosen name? Your bother might be named Harley Ashwood? Seriously if I was your contemporary I’d be a full time fan. You have a wonderful way of teaching encouraging folks to self explore as much as following your teachings. Love your very pleasant looks including hair in a bun, librarian glasses and muscle definition in your arms. Yes I am flirting with you but with utmost respect. You got it going girl in all the right categories. Killer smile as well as deft tool work. Got to admire someone with lathe skills and wood knowledge. I’ve been turning for about 30 years and 20 as a semi professional. My day job was in public health which I didn’t want to leave but my wife and I hosted “open studios “ in San Francisco where I sold an average of 100 pieces per opening. So having some experience on my Oneway, I think I can spot a special talent when I meet one. Keep up the fine work. Gouge on!

I agree. Ashley is a sweet strong woman. I would be willing to set my lathe nearby. I feel she brings the better out of people and I enjoy people who do this.

Your videos always have a different perspective. I think most others focus on showing how. Yours focus on why, but that isn't the only part. Whatever it is, keep doing it!

My sketchbooks go back over 40 years. What amazes me is not how much they have changed (and they have) but how consistent my esthetic has been. What was interesting and attractive to me decades ago is still very much something I like. Keeping these has provided a clear picture and an interesting journey. As always a great video on a great subject.

Thanks for treating the subject of design. Sometimes I think turners focus so much on tools and techniques that design gets shelved. I'm primarily a spindle turner who appreciates good proportions and dimensions. Again, thanks.

My favorite design professor was fond of saying, "A designer thinks with his pencil." (Though I don't think he came up with that bon mot himself, rather learning it from his teachers at the _Haute École de Joaillerie_ in Paris.)

Ashly...my son's have a jet 16 inch lathe They want to upgrade to a larger machine ..that they can turn large pieces.. What kind of lathes do you run...do you know what the best machines made today are? What about a source for used good machines... We live in Hawaii... Thanks Frank

She’s turning on her Vicmarc lathe, but she also has Laguna lathes for her students. Vicmarc are Aussie made and can’t really be beat, but she also respects a bunch of other lathes. I’m sure she’ll tell you as much before too much longer.
