Welcome to this weeks woodturning video
Woodturning | The Yew Lamp
In this woodworking video, I use a woodturning lathe to turn a very large piece of green yew into a lamp.
When woodturning a piece, I find it important to nibble away at it until the shape of the wood reveals itself. This is what is so enjoyable about woodturning. Big log into little lamp. But I find removing the wood in layers allows me to find the best possible shape.
If you find these videos entertaining I’d appreciate you hitting the thumbs-up button and if you'd like to see more woodturning video's from me, you can simply click the subscribe button or bell icon.
Thanks a lot!

You know, the yew grain and the light inspired me for the lamp's name - "The forehead of sage". Must say this piece is of your amazing and surprising idea. Yes. Where are you laying the lamp now? (Don't tell me. I'm greedy for lovely things. Hihi...)

Dude is that your stock pile!? Wow! Love the lamp, am planning to give one a go here soon - thinking of doing it all in aspen and seeing if I can get it thin enough to make an aspen shade. Thanks for another great project video!
@JackMackWoodturning
@JackMackWoodturning 3 года назад
🤣.. some of it… there’s probably more indoors than out, and more still in other locations…yet I still struggle to be inspired some mornings when I come to shoot a video… do you find it a tricky balancing act not turning too much of the same thing for your channel?? All I want to do at the moment is do really deep vases but I’m sure people would get bored of that pretty fast. Your lamp sounds cool ! I had intended on turning the shade for this from a piece of sycamore that had been felled recently but I couldn’t find a section to fit.. Il be doing a smaller lamp soon with a turned shade. Looking forward to seeing how yours comes out. J

So aside from the splendido wood turning how exactly did Jack come to possess this fantabulous log?!! I might be a tiny bit jealous!!
@JackMackWoodturning
@JackMackWoodturning 3 года назад
This particular log is the main stem from a yew tree that we felled 2 years back. I try to make connections with land owners in my local (50+ mile) area and will remove windfallen and damaged trees in return for the timber. The vast majority of my wood is felled by tree surgeons and I buy the good stuff to save if from becoming firewood .

That is really beautiful! I am new turner want to try some green wood, is that an oil finish? And how do you prevent cracking, shifting? Thank you.
@JackMackWoodturning
@JackMackWoodturning 3 года назад
Hi David, this was finished with shellac sealer and a microcrystalline high gloss wax. In a piece like this I’d expect and welcome the odd check from drying, If I was using a wood prone to big wide cracks I’d most likely hollow the base from the bottom and make sure it had a very even 1/4” or less wall, then I’d leave it to dry in the workshop for around a week before sanding and truing up the base. Thanks for watching, any more questions feel free to fire them my way. 👍🏻😊😊

Cheers Matthew.. I’m glad iv been able to entertain you. I don’t think this piece is going to crack but if it does it will only be very small cracks and will add to the character of the piece.

Do you think it would be possible to make a decent living with a 12" inch lathe not turning pens? If so how would you go about it it.
@opposingforces7821
@opposingforces7821 3 года назад
Big market in tooth picks I hear
@JackMackWoodturning
@JackMackWoodturning 3 года назад
It’s absolutely possible. But when you start making money selling your items you’ll be able to buy a larger lathe. In the last 3 years of my production turning iv made 90% of my turnover from items less than 8 inch diameter.. you only need more than that if your turning large bowls, platters or very large pedestals. In my experience it’s more profitable to make lots and lots of smaller bowls and sell them for a price that lots of people are happy to pay. The mistake a lot of woodturners make is to over value their work based on the time it take “them” to make.. when the focus should be on learning to turn fast, safe and efficiently so that you can make the product in a manner fitting the price people want to pay..in the beginning volume and quality is key, if you can’t turn fast with an acceptable finish then I’d recommend you continue it as a hobby until you have that side of it locked down. I can’t give you ideas for products as it all depends of what method of sales works for you or works in your local area. My best advice would be to keep your tools sharp ALWAYS, and take a leap of faith when you feel ready. Best of luck with you adventure, Jack.

@@JackMackWoodturning thank you for the speedy response. You answered the question very well. It's giving me a direction to look at.
@JackMackWoodturning
@JackMackWoodturning 3 года назад
No problem. I wish there was a hard and fast rule but for my experience it’s been to really maximise productivity.. and I’m time you find the items that work. They may not be what you really enjoy turning but going to work every day as a wood turner is still way better than most jobs. It’s can be lonely tho, it definitely helps if you enjoy your own company, for me audio books and podcasts get me through my day. Feel free to ask any questions you might have. Always happy to help.
