Great job. I compare a tip top to a thrown soccer ball, if it is touched it changes the spin but doesn't lose it. Angular Momentum I think is the name.

A VERY good instructional video. I think will put this back in shop to try again

Thanks for the comment. Out of the 30 I made I had 2 that I couldn't adjust to get them to flip over. This is a fun one. Good luck. Burt

Burt, try using a couple of colored sharpies for the finish. You can put stripes on it, and see that it does change directions. As in clockwise to clockwise.

Also a 3/8 spindle detail gouge can do some of your hollowing happy turning

I love the plug cutter idea, if there’s any any way to do it somebody will find it.

Thanks for your comment. A plug cutter really makes it easy. Burt

The top doesn’t reverse rotation. It’s always spinning the same direction. It only appears to be spinning the other direction once it has flipped except nothing has actually changed. Draw a direction arrow on it and give it a spin and you will soon see that it had spun the same direction the whole time. Nice job though. 👍

Thanks for the comment. You are right. When it flips over it still spins in the same direction. I've had a lot of fun with the tippe top. I hope you do too. Burt

I got a yellow tip tip when 9 from Sunday school teacher 60 years ago . It had a pointed stem If you ride the bevel of detail gouge against the bottom of the body to part off you have less of a nub to sand I will have to get that book and make more tops If you move your camera to the right a foot and.angle towards chuck we will see your work and not the back of your head but well done

Burt, great video - I would like to try macking one of those tops, I realize the the proportions are relative. Wold you share with us what the ratio and szes of your top measured. Thanks again for a very good turning example.

Nelson, If you are close to the proportion I gave in the video, you should be just fine. I think we can ignore the type of wood and their differences in weight. From left to right the numbers refer to the body diameter, body height, protrusion of the stem, and the depth of the recess. The stems are flat on the end, which I think is important. The recesses do have a fairly flat bottom but the sides aren't square, so I can't accurately tell you how much wood was removed. These numbers should give you an idea of how much the proportions can vary. All of these worked just fine. 1) 1.33 1,09 .35 .41 2) 1.32 1.00 .42 .40 3) 1.24 1.02 .46 .29 4) 1.43 1.02 .48 .44 5) 1.43 1.02 .47 .54 6) 1.39 .92 .48 .35 7) 1.22 .97 .44 .36 Good Luck! Let me know if you have any success. Burt

Thank you much. I definitely will give it a try, I am absolutely fascinated at the skill level by you and others. As a "new- be - turner" hopefully in the near future I will send a positive message - thanking you even more

I did look at the video but I'm not sure what you are referring to. I may have been pressing the bevel of the spindle too hard trying to get the cut started. Burt

the changes in playback speed are startling and detract from your video. Would be very easy to dub in a vocal warning that it is coming. Otherwise nice videos.
