Woodturning - Wet Beech Wobble-Bowl!?

So I got some freshly cut Beech the other day and I wondered if I could turn it into an end grain wobble-bowl. When I say "Wobble-bowl" I mean that I turn the wood while it is still soaking wet and hope that instead of cracking it starts to warp and wobble's. I think I turned it thin enough to induce some wobbling, but only time will tell. I will put updates on my Instagram if you want to see how it turns out.
More of a traditional project coming next week! Stay Tuned!

Disclaimer:
My videos are for entertainment purposes only. I am still relatively new to woodturning and some of my techniques might not be the "best" or safest. When using any tools or machinery always read and understand safety/manufacturers guidelines.
Yes, I'm aware that wearing gloves while woodturning is considered an unsafe practise. The gloves I wear are tight fitting and don’t have any loose threads. I wear them for the protection of my skin. This is a risk that I am willing to take, however I am still very conscious of the potential danger and I do not touch any spinning parts of the lathe. DO NOT do anything you don’t feel comfortable doing.

Harry good night you are congratulations with your work I watch all your videos, out of curiosity what is the price of a lathe like this in your country because it is very expensive here monrrod, around five thousand reais and of poor quality.

Thanks for your comments Inácio. I purchased mine second hand, it's an Axminster variable speed wood lathe and cost £550 with some chisels, other tools and wood blanks. It was a great bargain 👌 🪵😃👍

Hi Eli, I will release a short of this wobble bowl. Its been slowly drying in the cold workshop and moisture level of the wood has dropped considerably. Remarkably there are no cracks and it has warped.... or wobbled 🪵😃👍

Did you have your waterproofs handy? I'll bet drying off the lathe and tools was a pain in the butt😂😂Last time I turned wet wood I got soaked and splattered and struggled to see through my visor, I literally had water running down the flute of my gouge! twas fun though, cut through like butter. Regards, Tony.

About 18 months ago, I also turned a couple of beech end grain slabs, they're still drying. I found turning into end grain damned hard, so turned the tool rest parallel to the axis, and cut in radially. Found that much less stressful.😊 This video reminded me, and it's about due time to see if they've survived. Yours is amazingly thin. I'll be surprised if it escapes without cracks. I gave another to a neighbour, and told her to wrap it in an old towel and put it in a plastic bag for a couple of years. She didn't, and it split all over the place. (No patience, always wants everything yesterday!) .
@HarrySmithShorts
@HarrySmithShorts 2 года назад
Hi niklar thanks for sharing as you say wood turning requires plenty of patience! How did the other bowl look? I'm keeping it in the cold workshop, I turned the edge thin as I wanted it to warp and 'wobble' but not crack. No massive cracks yet but also no warping! 🪵😃👍
@niklar55
@niklar55 2 года назад
@@HarrySmithShorts You could cheat, and 'warp' it using hot water and pressure into a curved shape. Or maybe just apply water on some points so that the drying isn't uniform. Logically, as the edge will dry more quickly than the centre, it is shrinking, so will not buckle to produce warps. To produce a wavy edge, you'd need to cut a ring of wood ( the same diameter as the bowl) horizontally with a wavy cut, heat/wet the bowl and then clamp between the two pieces of the ring. [I don't know if this would be effective, it's just a thought experiment!]😊 Warping/bending wood is a whole skill in itself. .

Ohh! So wonderfully done. Just a month ago at the heavy snow storm quite a few trees fell and I had the pleasure to receive 4 beautiful cross cut of beech and practically dripping wet. I turned one what an amazing feeling and its marking were spectacular. I did need to smothered the large bol in several intervals and put it in the gaz oven at low heat to prevent cracks. The others are much thicker and I covered the end grain with yellow glue mixed with pentacryl for now but I do plan to turn them relatively green/ wet. Love you work.
