In this woodworking video I use a woodturning lathe the turn some sheets of rainbow ply into a 'dizzy bowl' with a sycamore base. I feel this video falls into the ASMR and entertainment categories.
If you find these video’s a good source of entertainment, I’d appreciate you like, share and subscribe.

Although the finished bowl looks magnificent, I liked it better with the stair-step effect. It certainly took a lot of patience, skill, and creativity, for this masterpiece to unfold.
@MrOortCloud

The optical illusions that occur as a result of putting small amounts of drag on the lathe when carving, the inside especially, are incredible. For a moment I saw it flicker from one stationary image to a completely different stationary image, all while in motion. It's like a rim on a fast moving car times a thousand.
@PetroicaRodinogaster264

They say it is not the destination that is important, but the journey…but if your prep and lathe, and finishing work are the ‘ journey’ and the bowl is your ‘destination’, then both are as significant as each other. A work of art! I hope you got a good price for it.

I was thinking about the saw dust being used to fill homemade pincushions. My Dad was a woodworker up into his 90’s, and kept a box under his table saw to catch sawdust. During the summer before he passed(2017), I asked Dad for some of the sawdust to fill homemade pincushions. He said to take as much as I wanted. I ended up with 4 or 5 gallon-size ziplock bags. I want to made pincushions for the women in our family filled with sawdust from Dad’s/Grampa’s/GreatGrampa’s workshop.

A dizzy bowl is always a cool project. You can simplify this by gluing the half sections into full squares, marking the rings, and then cutting the rings on the lathe. It's quick accurate and you don't have to bother gluing half circles together. I put the squares on a piece of MDF that is mounted in the chuck with the squares held in place with double-sided tape so nothing goes flying off. Works great
@JackMackWoodturning
@JackMackWoodturning Год назад
I would have done that with solid wood but the laminations on this rainbow ply are a little sketchy.. too much force and they’ll part quite easily. You can imagine that as the rings part on the lathe they could easily go for a little bounce across the shop.. I fear they wouldn’t remain rings after that. That bandsaw and glueup was a much more gentle approach. Gentle isn’t normally my thing, but this was very delicate. 🙂
@joshblumenthal4873
@joshblumenthal4873 Год назад
I get that. When I make a dizzy bowl, I make my own laminations but they are only about 3/16 when I cut the rings. I have an MDF disc I put in my chuck and then I hold the lamination there with a few strips of double sided tape so when I cut the rings they stay on the MDF. I cut all the rings and then take them off. Cool bowl

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Gallery’s mostly show work for sale. And take 49% commission on the sale price. Iv displayed work in galleries for many years and also sold a lot of work that way. These days RU-vid is my gallery and I can sell my work directly to the customer for much more reasonable prices as I don’t have to double the price. @mizm1186
@mizm1186 Год назад
@@JackMackWoodturning Wow! I'm sorry. I wasn't aware that a gallery would rip an artist off like that! I understand they need to make some money also but that's crazy! Maybe with a really well-known artist it would be reasonable but not with someone starting out and trying to promote themselves. Are online art auction sites (not ebay) just as bad? I read a tip once, regarding ebay and art pieces, that you can test out what people really think of your work by setting a pretty high minimum price, not shown (I just forgot the name for that), and see if people will accept and surpass it. It's like a test to see if you're either over or under pricing your work. Anyway..... Sorry for rambling on and thank you for sharing how galleries work. I will most definitely check your website out. I wish you continued success!!

Pinocchio did not appear out of nowhere; he was carved from a special wood by the talented and art loving Geppetto. And that’s who Jack Mack is -- a modern Geppetto who’s searching for his soulmate. As the manufacturer of the material used in this video, we could not be more amazed and proud with the final results... way to go Jack, you did it again! And lastly, not to take anything away from Jack’s professional craftsmanship, for everyone out there watching this and thinking, I could probably replicate this but got spooked by the circles cutting and build back time consuming part, just a suggestion, all that can be easily carved on a CNC and also customized for different desired bowl shapes. I love rainbow 🌈 and bright colors so much. And it’s very bright and rainbow. The way it all fits together and looks trippy like it’s moving is so cool as well.

You should do something mid-century style like this, with the colors to match, like brown, dark orange, dark yellow. That would look so cool.

Your talent is amazing, and the fact you keep your videos so simple, it really allows us to appreciate what you are creating. You make it look so easy, but I know it is truly an art.
