This video explains calculation for λmax determination (1,3-butadiene system) using Woodward Fieser rule, for 3 simple structures. You will get idea to identify ring residues, exocyclic double bonds etc. Few more complex structures will be explained in next video sessions.

Alkyl substitution and ring residue is same

Ring residues are the bonds making the ring.. alkyl substitutions are the bonds on the ring. The incremental value for both is same.
