Can I just say that the anticipation you’ve built when sanding for that sand in the place where you live song is spectacular. I expect it every time and am bummed when it’s not there. Love it!
That's a really nice-looking chair, Dave. My favourite part was seeing your face where you unfolded the chair. I really like the humour in your videos. Your videos are so entertaining and informative to watch. Keep it up!
Funny because I grew up in Denmark in the 1960's and this exact style of chair, in adult size, was one of the most common spare chairs people would keep in the garage, a spare room, basement or the likes, for when having parties and needing extra chairs. They were typically made from beech wood and some versions even had a slim 'tongue and grove' carved into the length of the main rail/leg so they stacked nicely against each other when folded up. Because they were made from quality wood they were extremely strong and therefore loads of them still exist today.
I've moved around endless numbers of the adult sized version of that chair. Exact same look. Back in the 80s and 90s everyone had a pile of those handy for when you had extra guests. For larger parties it was far from uncommon to borrow a pile from several nearby neighbors.
This style of folding chair reminds me of all the holidays my family has celebrated over the years. My aunt and uncle who host Christmas, Thanksgiving, and some other holidays got about 15 of these at least 2-3 decades ago from one or more churches he preached for
David. You've created a production style that is wholly your own and I love it. Do what makes you happy of course, but you are in a good place right now. I am taking the time to comment about it because I know you always wonder, and I genuinely want you to know.
I love watching the thought process in the development of this project. I have to go through the same thing every time one of my daughters sends me a photo and says "Can you make this?".
I have learned a lot on you channel but I will say one of the most useful things I’ve picked up from you is how useful playing cards can be in woodworking
I’m not sure how many woodworkers actually try to build chairs. I feel like it’s a low percentage. That low percentage of woodworkers who try to build a chair are the brave ones. Well done Dave! Even more props for building a chair after building previous chairs.
Awesome video! Got a trick for you with that bending the ruler to trace a curve thing. Take the appropriate length quick grip clamp and put your straight edge in the jaws. Then when you slowly squeeze the handle you change the bend of the arc. You can do it one handed so you can trace it yourself.
I love the comment by your brother that it’s gonna be a miracle if this works 😂😂 my Brothers do that to me all the time, until they need me to build something for them. That’s what Brother’s do, awesome video and you keep being you 👍
Great job (the woodworking and the videography as well!) !! That hesitation/anticipation look you had when you slowly squatted to sit in the chair for the first time was priceless! :)
We don't think about folding chairs since they're so ubiquitous, but there's some interesting mechanics at work there. This was a fun build! I never doubted you for a second. Thanks for sharing! #respectthehickory
This chair looks amazing…Glue-Tang Clan 😂 I appreciate your expressing your self-doubts, which shows your vulnerability, but you also consistently show how you persevere and finish your projects. I enjoy your “Everything is an experiment” attitude. Keep it up! And thanks to the video playing in the background, I now I want to go watch Kill Bill again 😎
Fun video man! You crack me up! The subtle things like the boards coming off the table saw, then the push block... lol, nice touch. NO JOKE chairs are hard! Watching the brace for impact when you sat in it... priceless, I know the EXACT feeling! I built a tiny dining room style chair for my youngest son recently and I still cringe and get ready for tiny bon fire every time I see him leaning in it!
David you nailed that. I really like how it turned out. It's a very nice and uniquely clean design sir. Can't wait to see more videos soon my friend. Keep up the great craftsmanship and hard work my friend. Weld On. Fab On. Make On. Make something. Keep making. God bless.
This project greatly interests me because I have an old folding table that came with a pair of matching folding chairs that fit inside a cavity in the table frame. A relative gave me the table but kept the chairs for some reason. I seriously would not mind trying to make chairs for it down the line. I don't have the tools for it yet, but some day.
Astonishing! Chair is something I said I'll never build myself. Ok, maybe one day when I have built everything I wanted and am still kicking around 😂 Anyway, I want to say you're showing a nice portion of your awkwardness (personality) already and that's also the reason I love watching your videos ❤ Also the subtle humor you put in your videos (yeah, I saw the push block flying) is something I definitely need to brighten the day!
Love the chair! Great build! I will say, I was looking forward to seeing you reuse parts of the chair like you have used parts of the thrifted version in your past videos. No shade and not taking away from the absolutely great work. Just would of been nice. You could of used the old chair for the slats and back support or something. Again great build!
You could have taken the measurements from an Air Ministry Folding Chair. That's what the miniature is a copy of. They were made in Britain in their thousands during WWII. A design classic.
Got a question as someone that isnt a wood worker, why *was* it so hard to build it? Wouldnt it be just a question of scaling up each measurements from the child chair and transfering them down to the right spot on the larger parts?
I love the direction you've taken your channel lately. This was a great video. You've got me wanting to head to the Goodwill to find something to build.
I think that chair is called a 'Tree-est' not 'try-est', or, if you want the Italian, 'Tree-est-eh'. That's assuming that it's named after the Italian port city anyway :)
Really nice chair, and super inspiring! I've been wanting to build a couple chairs for different purposes and this one would work great. Looking forward to the more detailed video.
The most impressive part, or craziest, is that you went at it by building on the fly rather than designing in some kind of SAD software first. Edit: LOL, wrote this before you made the software design comment. Also the reference design from 1966 seems ironic because it looks like the designer of that chair was going for a folding chair design without it actually being a folding chair.
Dig it. FYI, there’s a high pitched buzzing in the left channel. It’s faint. I didn’t hear it on my TV but I switched to headphones for the second half of the video. You might not have even noticed it in the edit. Anyway, keep up the great work! Also, nice use of MC Hammer for Whoomp There it Is. 😂 The subtle jokes like that and not grabbing the wood are great touches.
fuckin chairs are hard dude. great job love seeing the process in this video! its something i too enjoy remaking something or improving upon another item. very cool dave. keep up the good work dude!
I'm thinking of re-doing a video previous video I made about when to use sapwood and when not to use it. I see you cutting off the sapwood in the video. Mind if I use some bits of your footage in my video and possibly my thumbnail? (I am thinking of calling it "Why do RU-vidrs waste wood"- LOL, But don't worry, it will be in jest) I'll use it as an opportunity remind my viewers to check out your channel if they haven't been here recently.
Today I learned your wood shop is carpeted! Definitely see the down side of using an angle grinder on carpet. But does using wood tools and all the saw dust not as well? While the carpet had to be great for standing on and echoes for camera, hie do you manage to not just be walking on and gringing in, saw dust constantly?
Took me a while to figure out that the high-pitched whirring sound was coming from the video. Now I know I can try to tune it out to enjoy the video. But so far it's very annoying and hard to ignore.
