Several years ago, our church underwent a major renovation. In the process, we removed a house that was built in the 1920's. I salvaged the stair treads and finally figured out what to build with them. Filmed on the iphone 10 with the iphone camera stand. Logo design by Brandon Kettle. Video music is "images of Tomorrow" and "Song of Mirrors", both by Unicorn Heads.

You got the vacuum system all set up. That's really nice. The book shelf is awesome and I think the slightly visible plugs actually add to the antique feel. Dad was very impressed with the shop, by the way. Thanks for helping him out.

Thanks Joe! I was glad to help. I always enjoy sharing the shop with those who can appreciate it, especially so with a wood working legend like your dad. It means a lot that he was impressed.

Thanks so much Carol! I always knew I wanted to salvage and preserve them, and I think I finally came up with a project worthy of them. Thanks again.

Thanks so much Ken! I really treasure this one for the history behind it. I have since done months of research on Coulter Lumber Co., and even gave a presentation to the local Historical Society on the subject. Needless to say, this project is near and dear to me. Thanks again for the view and the kind comment.

Really nice job. I was looking at the Tom Silva "This Old House" video where he made a bookcase out of stair treads. Your's is a nice video to compare it with. I especially like how you kept the aged surfaces visible. Thanks for posting it.

Thanks so much Paul! Sorry it took me so long to answer. I too like the one Tom made. TOH is my favorite show (The New Yankee Workshop was while it was on), and I have been watching it since I was a kid. I love the aged surfaces and all the marks and labels and lettering from 100 years ago. I love the character it adds. Well thanks again for watching and commenting. It is greatly appreciated.

I like the fact that you were able to use wood that would normally been tossed out, I do this a lot, and many people don't realize how much lumber cost and throw away wood that can be use to make something else. Thanks for the video, you have a great talent. My problem is I have a hard time finding resources to build projects from salvaged lumber. I found a few books, but that's it. Any suggestions?

First of all, let me say thank you for the view and the comment! I too like to repurpose wood and other items when possible. It so happened that these treads had a sentimental and historical connection too. As far as resources, that's a bit tougher. I watch a lot of other makers on RU-vid, many of which reuse salvaged materials from time to time. That may be a good starting point. I don't know if you have a local maker group in your community, but you should look into it if you haven't. Some of my closest friends have come through my association with our local maker community. We challenge each other, share our skills, and bounce ideas off one another. Surround yourself with talented and kind peers, and you will be surprised at the avenues that open up in all walks of your life. Well, thank you again, and thanks for your thought-provoking question!
