For the playing card trick. I use post-it’s instead with the sticky side towards the wall. So no glue needed there. And when the edges you’re scribing to aren’t straight, you can just have post-it overlap a little onto the wall, trace it with a utility knife to cut the exact shape. Stick it onto your board and done.
@simplyraw1369

Where those lil mini post-it's can come in handy too, which is cheaper than the playing cards, can be re-used too. Love it thanks!

Love the upside down jigsaw tip. Another tip for using the jigsaw... angle the blade a bit so you also produce a sharper edge to meet the wall (like you did with the table saw). It is then easy to adjust the edge with some minor sanding.

One other idea for scribing - if you don't have too much variation to the wall surface (IE: Stone, Brick), you can put a washer, or a dowel with a hole drilled through it, over your pencil. It acts like a roller and moves smoothly with your pencil.

Before this video, I did not know what scribing let alone how to do it. After watching the video every home project I've hated has suddenly made so much sense. When you said scribing could be a two step process things started making even more sense on why past projects did not turn out like I planned. Just did a floating counter in our new walk-in pantry, and scribed it to the walls with a perfect fit! Thank you.

Good tips and love the upside down jigsaw one. Unfortunately most tutorials only focus on the end that needs scribing and ignore the real life problems. The last time I had to do this was with kitchen base units where the wall was wavy and the floor wasn't level. So, I had to scribe both sides of a corner while making sure that the top would be level with the worktop and the front would be flush. They were laminated particle boards so I didn't have the luxury of scribing the wall and floor sides then cutting the front and top to the right sizes. The scribe lines couldn't just be a random distance from the edge, but taking material off one edge would also affect the other edge. And that was just in my own kitchen!

Awesome video. I used an expired credit card for a scribe, where I drill a hole near the edge big enough to fit the pencil tip. It's nice and thin, but sturdy enough to guide easily. I was surprised at how well it works. Benefits: 1) You don't have to worry about how you hold the pencil because the hole is the size of the pencil tip. 2) It's closer to the work piece so you get a more accurate scribe. 3) You easily drill another hole in the card to get further or closer to the wall you are scribing. 4) It fits under gaps so you can get the pencil mark closer to edges. 5) You can use the same hole at an opposite edge wall by just flipping the card :) 6) You can cut the card so it's less wide to capture more variations in the wall. Cons: 1) It's straight so it works best on non-textured walls. You would have to cut the card so it has less width to capture stuff with large variations. I could see where the washer trick would be better here.

@@tomskimcdouglegaming806I have to say I totally agree! Heck there are many valuable videos that lead the way where you start with only the very basics of tools. Giving insights on EVERYTHING! WHERE the wide world of wisdom is formed from the ways where all are wise. The key to where the given lies possible is simply communication. Communication gives the first need which is an understanding. Though what works for one certainly doesn't work for all. Life is rAw where the fact is Right Accompanies Wrong both are equally dependent upon the other where each serves the same purpose in different ways. The choice you give is just an opinion. Where diversity works in interesting ways. Accepting the fact we are all just different we are unique. It's in misunderstandings due to lack of communication that mixes and mess up the perfect balance of life. where life's Design is rAw. For the motion of time stems from both a positive and negative; two opposites make the one that gives motion. In the center of the circle of life we ALL STEM. AND ARE DEPENDENT UPON ONE ANOTHER! LIFE IS COMPLEX NOT COMPLICATED. MISUNDERSTANDINGS TAKES THE GIVEN rAw Design to become ASS backwards in a battle in Tug a WaR. For many have been fooled into believing they have earned their rights giving them to be holding ENTITLEMENT. And that's just not a given fact in reality. Setting aside our own ways in desire where All meet in the middle sharing our own given unlocks life treasure where it holds true all things are possible. You won't like it all but nonetheless love is derived from the respect that enables the same difference where all are different equally. No one has the ability to survive life alive. What we can do is give all we got so that in giving we all gain by enabling. Strive to where we all are thriving. Together in effort becomes effortless. Understanding where the given lies are in the facts. No one can change that! Pay the dues with respect. For the truth is in the given where the facts need the understanding in proper order of perspective as given. ABC's of life..... where complex is easy to live by when you ..... Accept build change discover experience foster give help improve join kinship love more now overcome protect quench respect start together unique variables wonder xenial yearn zest, zeal & zen. Respectfully, Due to the given order it is just wise and makes the only sense to pay the same given. The way of change makes a helluva difference! FLAT WASHERS come in several sizes, widths and thicknesses. Fender washers, SAE, USS and metric. I've often seen and use washers to scribe an edge. Jason great video for the newbies and start up guys, only thing you didn't mention I thought I would point out is the depth of the cabinet or dressing panel. When scribing you need to have enough material to ensure the panel still aligns with the front of you piece or have enough of a service void on the back of a cabinet as not risk having to unnecessarily cut into you cabinet back panel. Great video as usual and totally agree regarding the trend scribe it's to thick to get a nice scribe on alot of surfaces like brick or textured walls.

The funnest scribing is a rock wall or moldings like a crown chair bumper or mopboard moldings. They have those multi-disc contour boards you just push in and all the thin discs adjust to whatever shape it is whether it is straight or not. Also when you get close rub graphite on the end of the board and give it a rub. That will show your highs to sand off. Great video. I'm inspired to go scribe something now.

My preferred method is to use a hole saw with a diameter of just over twice the width of the largest part of the gap to cut a circular scribe guide. Put a pencil down the middle of the guide hole created with the hole saw (forstner bit down the centre if it's not quite large enough). Using this means that the pencil *shouldn't* be able to wander away up or down like using a compass or the drill bit through the pencil. I use a jigsaw to cut close to the line so I don't have to worry about tearout, then use a handheld belt sander clamped to the bench to cut all the way to the line (if the piece is small enough to move easily, otherwise take the belt sander to the piece clamped down).

Tip: jigsaw blades can wander and flex creating an angled cut that might be the wrong angle so the back of your piece touches your “wall” before the edge of your finished face. So as your cutting out an angle on your cut on purpose. Something that was done in advance in the video but never on the scribe cuts themselves. Also like so many things practice is key!

This is all really good, very informative. As others have mentioned the tick-stick approach is also useful for these types of situations. In fact, it will allow you to 'scribe' in behind complex shapes (like a gutter) which have surfaces/faces that are inaccessible to a simple scribe tool.

I had to scribe for a shelf in an old telephone nook and used plastic folders as template material and a washer and pencil as my scribe on the rough plaster walls. It worked good but playing cards would’ve been easier. Thanks for the tips Jason!

I like the upside down jigsaw trick and not just for scribe cutting. I will keep that in mind for the next time I am using my jigsaw.

When doing the playing card trick you could use an ordinary glue stick to glue the cards together instead of the CA glue. Saves on CA and sticks pretty well.

Excellent video BMW! Using that jigsaw upside down & the use of those cards for scribing, were real eye openers for me! Thanks so much.... 👍👍😉😉👏👏

Can you tear the wall down and re-build it to be square, plumb and flat?

You’d have to do your entire house if you wanted all square plumb and flat walls. None of them are any of those lol.

I usually use my small belt sander (2x14) for cutting the scribe. Might need a jigsaw in certain circumstances (like with brick/stone), or to remove the bulk of the waste. The belt sander is great for fine tuning. And back bevelling as you come right up to your line.

I'm trying to scribe a small roughly 6"x6"x1" block to go behind a porch light on clapboard siding. The awkward part is figuring out how to cut the profile since it's not like a board and both sides may not have the same profile; there may be a knot or warp on one side the other doesn't have.
