I just started perfumery. Regarding woody-amber accord I blended Iso E Super, Ambroxan, Ambreine Natural and rice Vanillin together, I am quite happy and find it a success. This is quite simple, but the smell is quite nice and harmonious. Ambreine is sometimes called like Labdanum on steroids, I used it as an alternative to Labdanum absolute. Ambreine Natural 10% 2 Vanillin 10% 5 Ambroxan 10% 1 Iso E Super 10% 2 (%) I will try to modify the formula in future.

Question: Why even add base notes like musks to an accord? Why not use the accord for what it is (in this case top- to mid node i am guessing?) in your perfume and then add a separate ambery musk accord that fits in the situation when you are finally working on an actual full-fledged perfume formula?

Hi Sam, kindly, one last question: why some chemical aromas from which you take the part that you then dilute are at the origin of different weight? I refer to Ethylene brassilate (0.300) and Timbersilk (0.200). Also, I don't know if this detail is important, I noticed that adding the weights of all the aromas at the origin we have the weight of 1 gram. Does this have any logic with the final dilution to create the deal? Could you please explain to me? Maybe because you prepare the quantity to be completed with perfumer's alcohol in order to obtain 1 gram of accord? 0,9189 (alcohol) +0,0811 (chemical aromatics). It's right?
@sammacer
@sammacer 3 года назад
I don’t really understand what you are asking. There’s no reason to add up to 1g, it’s just a coincidence

Very interesting this video, thanks. Sorry, could you explain the difference between Cedarwood 10% - weight 0.100, Eugenol 1% - weight 0.100 and Cinnamon 0.1% - weight 0.100? At the minute 15'38''. I mean: why are they the same weights but different dilutions? I can not understand. Can you explain to me please? Maybe why you change your concentration in this way? Maybe because you prepare the quantity to be completed with perfumer's alcohol in order to obtain 1 gram of accord?
@sammacer
@sammacer 3 года назад
No problem. Often I use pre-dilutions of the raw material. These pre-dilutions are in perfumer's alcohol, so for example, 'cedarwood (10%)' would be from a bottle which was made by putting 1g of cedarwood with 9g of perfumer's alcohol (i.e. a dilution of eugenol to 10%). Now coming back to the full formula. I always weigh everything out by weight, e.g. 0.100g. However, as a method of adding a smaller amount for stronger raw materials, I use the predilution instead. By adding 0.100g of cedarwood (10%), there's only actually 0.010g of the pure cedarwood in that amount: So when you see "0.100g cedarwood (10%) in the formula, you can think of it as 0.010g cedarwood and 0.090g of perfumer's alcohol. At the extreme case with the cinnamon, this is diluted down to 0.1% because it's so strong, so I'm really adding 0.0001g of the pure cinnamon, which obviously is too small to weigh out with a pipette. I hope this helps!

@@sammacer Hi Sam, thanks for the thorough explanation. So, if I understand correctly, in this scented accord that you illustrate, in the end you use: Amber 8: 0.01 Cedar wood: 0.01 Eugenol: 0.001 Ethylene brassylate 0.03 Trimofix: 0.01 Cinnamon bark ollifac: 0.0001 Timbersilk: 0.02 it's right?

Did you "redo" your amber 8 accord with raw materials, to then correctly dilute it to 10%, or was it that in amber 8 you already only used materials that were diluted at 10%? Cz I mean if you added some material at 0.1% dilution, wouldn't that dilute everything else aswell?
@sammacer
@sammacer 2 года назад
Exactly, it was 'redone' as you say to make it a total concentration of 10%.

I have a doubt. What is the difference between a Base or an Accord? I have also read the terms "base accord" and "base note accord". I am very confused about this. Thanks in advance.
@sammacer
@sammacer 3 года назад
Hi Francisco. Yes I can see why it's confusing as these both sound similar. A base is the same as a premade accord. A base note accord would be an accord made out of base notes. 'base accord' most likely means an accord which in a context where it's being used as the basis for a perfume.

Hi Sam, I'm just getting started and stuck on some terminology. Hope you'll help... To me, an accord is a reusable building block, you plug to in? Also, would you make an accord that crosses base to top note? Or are they usually just for a level? So if i had a signature set of fragrances that contained patchouli+sandalwood+musk+jasmine+Bergamot, is it ok to create an accord for that.
@sammacer
@sammacer 3 года назад
Be sure to check out my video on perfumery terminology and it should clear up most of your questions: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-e2i80xJ8Bsw.html. For sure you could make an accord which crosses from base to top. And yes, in your case creating an accord would be fine (though probably more accurately a 'base')
