Great knot! After 6 years in the navy and 23 years in the fire service i kind of considered myself a ropes and knots guy. This is one I haven't used before. I always love learning something new. This is why I enjoy your channel. Keep it up!
I love the irony that 6 years as a sailor and never used a sheet bend. I guess there's not much use for a sail on a military ship these days, is there!
Snug as a bug in a rug!!❤️ So easy the way you explained it. I popped out to the shed, grabbing some poles: I built one in the lounge! Ace. Had an argument with the misses, so I made her sit in it. Now she wants some in the garden Finally we can be rid of the patio chairs. Thanks so much!!👍✌️🇬🇧
They'll look much better in your garden than manufactured patio chairs. They will add a touch of natural class you just can't buy at a store/center. I'm thinking I will use a considerably longer center pole to hang a UCO candle lantern from. Two or three natural chairs with hanging candles in a garden setting? SWEET!!
I would completely agree! That is a REALLY COOL bushcraft seat! The only problem I have with this seat is one thing. I have to go to work, but now I want to go and play around in the woods and make one of these!
This design for a chair has been around for a long time and it works! However... This is a really good way to Ruin your wool blanket! The creaking sounds you hear while sitting in it are the fibers in the blanket separating and tearing apart. This creates stretched sections that can Not be fixed. It is much better to use a dedicated piece of heavy cotton, canvas, or the like and if you plan correctly, it can double as a rainy weather pack cover.
Easy-peasey, lemon-squeezey! Some years ago I went camping with a couple of buddies. They mocked me for taking a cheap, dollar-store tripod seat but we got rain and every time I stood up they fought for it. Extra weight, yes, but it wasn't a hardcore trip and it sure came in handy.
Don't think I'd be camping in Minnesota during winter but these videos cover awesome and unexpected winter tricks that give me peace of mind during long walks. Very well performed and edited. Alot more concise and entertaining than alot of survival videos on youtube, thanks Dan!
Man, I wish I knew this stuff 30 years ago when I was in scouts! You're like the cool kid, who always crafted the handy stuff like this at camp, while everybody else was searching for a wet log to sit on 😉...BTW, the coffee on your site is excellent!
Greatkilter here as well. :) I would not use my plaid in such a manner because my weight would likely cause the fabric to stretch irreparably. See Shadowcastre's comment above.
Great info, done this a bunch with my issued poncho. Didn't know that knot though, always used a bowline around a tree and a prussik holding the knot where the hood looped over. Then ran two mooring lines to the stick going thru the bottom of the poncho to anchor it in place. That way only needs one cross-stick...less chopping required. 😀
I had to watch this trick again, love it! But Dan you are hard core man! It was raining while you were doing this! I don't like a wet wool blanket BUT I think I came up with a mod for this super chair using a couple more pieces of wood attached to either side of the tripod, you can make a "over hang" with your tarp to keep you nice and dry from the rain, not just your bum lol. Let's see your video on this idea!
Great video as usual, I have done the same concept with the same blanket before, in a bipod configuration and leaned it up against a tree. Love doing this compared to having to carry a chair around.
Very cool knot. I opt for the Hidden Woodsman wilderness camp chair and stay warm under the blanket. You can also use a cheap hammock to make a few different chair/seat/swing setups.
As a fellow Pennsylvanian , the snow landed in South Jersey in Cape May yesterday. 11” of the wonderful white stuff , can you believe it ??? I’m just north of Philadelphia and we didn’t get squat !!! But I love the chair idea with wool blanket. I carry a large thick wool blanket in my Taco all the time , so I will follow this idea next time , thanks 🙏. Happy New Year
Really like your shows when you craft things like this! Thanks for all of the videos. I’m heading out for a 3 nighter in northern Wisconsin a few weeks from now.
I carry 4 - 100% wool Mil Surp blankets. I also wear a Great Kilt when "in the woods." Sometimes I wear a great kilt and carry an extra kilt. Really cool chair I'll have to try it out. I know that wool is pretty heavy but it's thermal properties are unsurpassed even when wet. I buy various weight 100% Garberdine Wool 5'x21' for my Great Kilts. The bolts are easily cut down into blankets. I have a "Shelter Kilt" that is waterproofed) with boiled linseed oil.
