8 February, 2018
WORD Christchurch was thrilled to host a very special event on 8 February 2018 with the talented and eloquent Nigella Lawson, culinary star and television personality.
Nigella is a champion of the home cook and her book At My Table celebrates the food she loves to cook for friends and family. The recipes are warming, comforting, and inspirational, from new riffs on classic dishes to adventures in a host of new dishes and ingredients.
Watch Nigella and New Zealand writer and food Nicky Pellegrino in an intimate conversation about food and life.

Animals are not ingredients; that IS where we differ. Traditional Italian cuisine was largely meatless by the way.

Isn't that largely because of economics? The first pizza was bread dipped in sauce

I respect different types of chef's, it all goes down to skill and creativity. But I agree with Nigella's take on food snobbery... most food snoobs don't understand anything about food.

She's not a chef. Also, she's had a high class, posh upbringing.

@@cookie_dough_hangover And she's still right about food snobs.

Honestly this talk should've been more in the middle and including all people from the aisle but it's pandering only to the left. Some right talk would've been nice too.

Clumsy people absolutely terrify me, almost anywhere but particularly in the kitchen. My partner is one such person, extremely intelligent but unfortunately they're also dead keen on helping me in the kitchen, insisting in fact that we cook all our meals together. Extremely nerve wracking. I have to constantly second guess everything they do before they do it because I just know things will go wrong. In a second they've burnt themselves, left the pot holders on the pot on the fire and we will all burn to death, touched something they shouldn't have touched, thrown out the stock instead of the bones, scalded their hands, arms legs, face....... It's impossible to think. I freeze every time they move a pot of boiling pasta or hot oil in a pan, I know if I move to the left so will they, if I move to the right so will they however even freezing seems to confuses them, I'm constantly having to scream instructions to avoid disaster . They take umbrage at this and get moody as a result .....cooking has become like online-gaming for me except the thing frazzled or falling of a cliff, squashed or bonked on the head is trying their damn hardest to also get me squashed bonked or frazzled. Little tip dyspraxia or DCD is helped enormously even in adults with Equine Therapy (riding therapy), horses fix almost anything I find so it shouldn't come as a surprise.

Many people simply have no spatial-temporal awareness. You would be surprised at how many people do not even have baseline hand eye coordination. You actually described a scene form where I work. No, I don't work in a kitchen, but my job requires a certain amount of fine motor skills and spatial awareness. Only about 10 percent of the people can do their job with any competence. Everyone else is a walking catastrophe.

@@StationaryEarth That surprise me. I always thought we were the majority. I would've thought we as a species would have needed to have evolved to avoid getting ourselves killed injured or otherwise with very finely honed "spatial-temporal awareness" and it's only a minority who are unfortunate not to have such!? It's what I imagined anyway....I think there is something of a problem that a fair number of people study to do things they're just not capable of doing in practise. Even though highly intelligent and even brilliantly successful academically they just don't have the necessary "fine motor skills and spatial awareness" to actually do the job. Anecdotal it may be but I personally know of a few doctors including a dentist I wouldn't trust to come anywhere near me with a drill or a scalpel. Lovely people but how they got their degrees is something of a complete mystery to me.

The "sugar-free cake" thing could have been because the woman was diabetic and wanted a Nigella dessert recipe SHE could safely eat...

What's wrong with Daily Mail Nigella - you're too intelligent and with it to make such a statement.
