I love this version, but I just saw the Deaf West revival on broadway with Andy and although it still hold the playfulness its definitely less comical and I enjoyed that more

Sometimes the laughing is great like at "mmm, i know" and "and so you should", but like when it's not a joke, i think it's supposed to be more serious, because this was actually controversial during that time and it was scary what could happen to you. not only that but, like, it really isn't funny sometimes
It was definitely written to be a comic relief scene, and I really wish it weren't. Yes, the show really needs some comic relief at this point in it, but the jokes can just be how extra Hänschen is, rather than being also about them getting together. The "so you should" line absolutely should be serious, because yes, he should. And also Word of Your Body was originally written just as a Hänschen/Ernst song before it was made for Wendla and Melchior as well, so like, they really could have done better. Having it be a reprise makes it less impactful and it just doesn't reflect both relationships.
I think it was a directors choice rather than the actors choice as it seems the done thing that this scene is always directed as the 'comic relief'... I've only seen two versions where it's done seriously - which is a shame because I think this scene is really beautiful and the comedy kind of masks the beauty of it.
TheAshumms I guess so, but it still sucks. Tbh I'm blaming Sater for the out of nowhere, ridiculous "As you should" line. I think the best interpretation is that Hanschen is trying to protect Ernst - giving him advice and stuff, not just being a dick - and of course that they really do love each other, but to have a fair portrayl of them you would definitely have to remove "as you should". Maybe have "And I love you! As we should." instead?
Maddie Barraclough the "as you should" line works perfectly in the Deaf West revival of SA, because they actually made the scene affectionate so it just sounds a bit arrogant of Hanchsen, which is well within his character. so I'd say it's definitely because of directing and interpretation, and to me the DWSA revival surpasses even the original production.
