A WordPress Plugin Development step by step guide. In this video, I take you step by step in creating your first simple WordPress plugin. Having the ability to create your own plugins, give you the control to enhance your website and maximize it's capabilities. It is also a good way to improve your productivity by creating block of code or text that can quickly be used over and over. I know PHP well, but it took me forever to learn Drupal 8 plugins; but thanks to this tutorial, I got it working in minutes! Now I'm sure the Wordpress API has a ton of other stuff beyond creating "short codes", but just based on what you gave me I can already do all kinds of stuff. So thanks for the awesome video!

I would recommend leaving the plugins Akismet Anti-Spam and Hello Dolly installed if you are new to WordPress development. You don't have to activate them. They are useful to open in your code editor to see examples of how to write plugins. I'm a mobile web application developer but have little experience coding WordPress plugins and themes. That's why I'm here watching these clips. Many thanks to the uploader.

Awesome.. Good luck. Yes, leaving those plugins in the directory for reference is a good idea. They can be a little complicating and some might not understand them when they are starting out, but great to see what they do in the programming.

@@jherbison Yeah, it's nothing that most people could jump right into, but there were some things I was wondering about coding WordPress that went beyond the basics. Like PHP if/elseif/else statements with and ( && ) and or ( || ) operators. I'm only on Part 5 of your series right now, but I wanted to know what my limits could be with WordPress ahead of time. It seems there aren't any. Anything I can do with PHP, it looks like I can do with WordPress. I have to learn to do it the WordPress way. That's why I appreciate your videos. There's a big market for WordPress developers out there right now. Everyone wants it. Radio and TV stations, restaurants, mom and pop stores... I guess they're used to it already and feel comfortable managing it, but they all want their branding and functionality.

Joshua Herbison I totally understand, but u do a great job and I imagine u are a terrific developer... Perhaps, u may clarify something for me. I am confused over how WordPress knows when to exercise content...I get how one needs to code the content and code the processing of that content. My question pertains to where u save the coded file, or upload to what directory URL? How do u know if WordPress is going to read and interpret the coding when and where u need it? It runs the short code before the content is returned. If it prints out the information, it will display first. If the content is returned it will replace the short code with the returned data.

Web based languages like PHP are still the best. If you are building Wordpress plugins, then you want to learn PHP and JavaScript.

Saw another comment about this.. I will make a video about this if you haven't figure it out yet. On my mac, I just drag and drop the root folder onto the sublime icon. Windows doesn't work as easy to do that.

Thank you for the question. I am using Sublime Text 3 with an SFTP package. When I hit Command+S (Mac) it automatically uploads the file to the website.

@10:21 can you detail why you added $content .= instead of $content =

$content is a string. You can continue adding to a string with $content .= If I just used $content = it would over write the first $content line. Thanks the comment and asking the question. I should have explained that in the video.
