I stumbled across this cover a few weeks ago, but I often find myself coming back to it. There are parts when you sound similar to Ben in the way that you convey the many emotions in this song. However, you also have completely made it your own and added little stylistic twists which make this perfect. There's raw emotion, especially when you switch to falsetto (seamlessly), yet there is a gentleness on top of that. It is simply amazing. You and your accompanist make a perfect pair. This is gold.
Antonio here is the advice from an old guy who sang most of his life. You have all the ingredients for amazing success. You have the physical..tall, handsome, interesting to watch. You have an incredible instrument with great tone and pitch and very solid breath control/support to belt. Clear as a bell on each note. Annunciation is excellent. I heard each word. The challenge I would issue is to add nuance and connect with the song. You were on camera, and I don't know how often you have sung this song. It could have been the first run through, or the first complete performance so some of the frozen body mechanics may have been form that. But watch your performance again and see if you feel the emotion comes across as "manufactured". It is technically wonderful. I can tell you have the focus, but you need to melt into into it. This is just my opinion, and just my encouragement for a very talented guy who should go far if he chooses. You are not chorus, you are a lead. I encourage you to find a venue to get comfortable under the glare on your own. If you aren't already. Congratulations and all my best wishes.
I remember Ben Platt introducing him on a performance... Please audition for Dear Evan Hansen. I may not be able to see Ben Platt live but I would love to see you when I watch the show anytime soon...I guess you could pass ss Connor (and I can imagine you as Enjolras) anytime, but your voice would really be a great Evan, just please have that skills to portray and act a very emotionally challenging role.
I can't with you two. You guys are so talented but beyond talent and anything else I can somehow capture such an immense amount of sincerity from both the piano and the voice that it leaves me speechless... It makes me think that what you're singing/playing is something that comes from the deepest part of your heart and no where else. You two are absolutely wonderful and God bless you
Beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. And I am VERY picky about covers of my favorite Broadway songs. Bravo! I hope you go on to have an amazing career in music!
I love that you can hear the emotion in his voice. It’s pretty much perfect compared to the original recording. This is amazing and almost had me in tears.
Excellent. I love how you tell the story both in your body and in your voice. Your excellent technique and vocal control allows you to do both at the same time. Bravo!
More people need to see this, his voice actually makes me want to cry, it's absolutely incredible Antonio please never go do a behind a desk job I would die stay on stage because you re going to make a mark on this world x
The amount of CHILLS I got. the way he has so much control of his voice OMG IM FREAKING AMAZED. Words fail to describe his talent. OMG WOW is all I have to say.
[EVAN] I never meant to make it such a mess I never thought that it would go this far So I just stand here sorry Searching for something to say Something to say Words fail, words fail There's nothing I can say I guess I thought I could be part of this I never had this kind of thing before I never had that perfect girl Who somehow could see the good part of me I never had the dad who stuck it out No corny jokes or baseball gloves No mom who just was there 'Cause mom was all that she had to be That's not a worthy explanation I know there is none Nothing can make sense of all these things I've done Words fail, words fail There's nothing I can say Except sometimes, you see everything you wanted And sometimes, you see everything you wish you had And it's right there, right there, right there In front of you And you want to believe it's true So you... make it true And you think maybe everybody wants it And needs it... a little bit... too This was just a sad invention It wasn't real, I know But we were happy I guess I couldn't let that go I guess I couldn't give that up I guess I wanted to believe 'Cause if I just believe Then I don't have to see what's really there No, I'd rather pretend I'm something better than These broken parts Pretend I'm something other than This mess that I am 'Cause then I don't have to look at it And no one gets to look at it No, no one can really see 'Cause I've learned to slam on the brake Before I even turn the key Before I make the mistake Before I lead with the worst of me I never let them see the worst of me 'Cause what if everyone saw? What if everyone knew? Would they like what they saw? Or would they hate it too? Will I just keep on running away from what's true? All I ever do is run So how do I step in Step into the sun? Step into the sun
Wow 🥺 Antonio!!!! You couldn't possibly fathom how talented you are because it's bigger than even you can see, but I promise you that what you just did will be remembered by me and many more for decades to come. Beautiful, just beautiful 😌👌
This song is so hard to perform well because the bar is so high from Ben Platts stunning performance. It requires immense vocal control, range, and versatility as well as appropriate emotional influence. You achieved all these things flawlessly, good on you
Please forgive me for commenting twice, but I stepped away and came back to listen to this again. And I just must add that Tyler, your accompaniment was exceptional! Such strong and sensitive work! Beautifully supportive of the singer and yet you were very much an integral part of evoking the mood of the piece. I heard every nuance and every little gem rarely heard when folks play this. On Antonio's falsettos, you were particularly tender and underplayed wonderfully. You guys really are something together. Bravo again to you both.
Glad you saw my note. Again, really beautiful work. So I had to look for your other stuff. Congrats on already having such a diverse online presence. I know you met Ben P. in NY, do you know if he's seen your version here? Also, is your next step college, or straight to NY? Is musical theatre the goal, or is it as a recording artist? As I know you've been told, you just have such a remarkably well developed tone, strong technique and intelligent interpretation for your age. You also really understand your voice and you make solid choices. You're just unusually mature with your talent development, for your age. So please forgive me for asking so many questions. I'm just curious about your next steps. I'm really interested in following your career, because Ben was right: you are going to be famous. Just got to keep focused, keep working and making smart choices. All the best!
Thank you for the nice comments! As of what I want to do after high school, I plan ok auditioning for colleges to study musical theater, but if I ever got an opportunity to go to NY, then I will definitely take that opportunity.
Stunning! Beautiful voice and his technique is very clever and suits the material. I just obtained the sheet-music of the show and sang through the song myself. I therefor know that he's actually impressively accurate with what's written on the page. Well done! Two thumbs up. My only critique would be, that he, ironically, is way too sexy/cute to be Evan. ;-)
I am simply blown away by this cover - what an incredible voice and amazing piano playing as well. This made my heart soar and took me on an emotional journey, I look forward to seeing what both of you have in store in your very bright futures!!
