I can already see the comments now of people saying that they’re not meaning it that way. Of course they’re not. I know that. But in a world with so much v!olence why would you choose that phrase? You could say I can’t believe you did this. You could say I’m so embarrassed. Why would you ever say I’m going to k!ll you? I admit I have used that phrase before but never to a student-usually to one of my peers, but this is a phrase that needs to go away. Maybe I am blowing this out of proportion, but in a world where even our schools aren’t safe, I don’t think I am. Change the phrase and change the narrative that your students are hearing. #endthehate #change #enough #wordsmatter

Hey, i admire your desire to make the world a better place, even if i dont agree that a coloquiallism would fall under that. Words do matter, especially in situations between adults and children. Nobody can predict how children might understand an off the cuff remark.

If a person is incapable of determining the difference of a threat is a figure of speech, society has completely failed that individual and continued nannying will only cause greater failure. Groupthink, goodthink, doublespeak are dangerous

You are forgetting about all those students out there with autism. If you think you can spot it you are wrong. There are a lot of teens out there who have Aspergers which is a high-functioning form of autism where the person can not understand sarcasm along with other social cues. It is society failing them. It is society failing to recognize that there are people out there who don't understand off-the-cuff, flippant, and sarcastic remarks. We are responsible for what comes out of our mouths.

While I agree it is a figure of speech, as a teacher in a position of authority, there are so many other ways to say "I'm embarrassed."

@carriehughes4313 society should have support services for people with mental health struggles, but it shouldn't be molded around the needs of those with special needs. And I say that as someone with asd and adhd. It's still equally my responsibility to understand my differences and how I can fit into society, just like a neurotypical individual is responsible for themselves. Please don't infantalize society on my behalf. I want all people to be able to fully express themselves, and be allowed to do the same (Genuine threats and harassment aside).

I mean, disregarding everything else, that's just extremely unprofessional to say to a student. I'm just wondering why it would ever come to mind in that situation tbh.

I know- it was so strange hearing that coming from a teacher!

I think a big part of why this phrase is so problematic is because it normalizes threatening language, and subsequently desensitizes those hearing it. I can’t count the number of crime stories where a violent offender has said this very statement about someone they went on to hurt or kill, only for the people who heard it to say, “I heard the comment, but I never thought he/she was being serious.” The more unacceptable we make certain language, the less likely we are to be blasé about the likelihood that a person spouting violent threats could be serious.
