Work Light Showdown: Streamlight Stinger Switchblade vs Braun (HF) - my pick may surprise you!

Hey everyone. I was doing a little work in the shop today and decided to do a quick side by side comparison of my two magnetic base work lights: the Streamlight Stinger Switchblade, and the Braun Slim Bar from Harbor Freight.
The Braun has three modes: high, medium, and an end-firing single led that allows you to look into smaller areas or search for parts without blinding yourself. It's advertised as having 390 lumens with an 11 hour run time...but I'm going to tell you right now, that's a little misleading. While the 390 lumen figure seems reasonable, I'm quite certain that their 11 hour runtime figure is only if you run the single LED that fires out of the end of the bar. On high, you'll get about a half hour of constant-on runtime out of it. My biggest complaint is that the bar doesn't fold flat into the handle like the switchblade, however, it has a multitude of positioning options that the switchblade doesn't have. It uses a standard 18650 rechargeable battery that can easily be replaced if needed. It's a tough, reliable, inexpensive no-frills light that does a great job of...well...being a light.
The Switchblade, on the other hand, is a serious beast of a light. Everything about it screams professional grade, from the rubberized exterior, to the fold-flat blade, super powerful base magnets, and hanging hook that recesses into the handle when not needed. It has a double-sided blade with a blindingly bright 800 lumen LED array on one side, a slightly warmer but equally bright high-CRI LED array on the back side, and a UV inspection LED built in. Battery runtime is outstanding at nearly 4 hours (which is actually accurate based on real-world use). One of the only things that I dislike about it is that while the blade folds flat, you aren't able to hyperextend the blade past the point of it being in line with the handle. This makes it a little awkward to use in some situations, and I find myself needing to use the high-CRI side of the blade in some cases. Additionally there is no end-firing LED, something that I actually find quite useful on the Braun. I have not tried to open it, but the batteries appear to be proprietary and non-replaceable. The quality is much, much better than the Harbor Freight light, but the cost is also about 4x more expensive.
So which one would I pick overall? Watch and see! Have a great weekend everyone.

The high CRI is nice for when pointing it into an engine bay and not getting light bouncing off off aluminum or metal and making it even harder to see... that's a great feature...to me...the Streamlight is much more durable..I dropped my Braun once...its never worked right since....the Streamlight is a beast

Yep, I have to agree after really putting both lights through the ringer over the last year. I still think the Braun has it's place, but for longevity the Streamlight is definitely where it's at. I'll be making a follow up video soon.

See this is a old vehicle, great video but one mention about CRI and Color Rendering Index vs Color Temperature. Streamlight made up the "CRI" as a sales thing it really just means they made a lower Kelvin LED that uses a better "true white" temperature that helps human eyes see details and contrast better. High CRI equals a lower Kelvin. Swichblades are around 3K for temp vs 6k for their regular High output LED. Just picked up both swutchblades, Thanks for the review and help!

Great comparison video! I'm also a Steamlight fan and have them in charges in my vehicles and around the property. That said I'm going to the Harbor Freight sale to pick up the US General box and plan on buying 4 of the Braun lights to leave in the tractor and atv's.

Thanks John! They are great little lights. I actually just ordered a couple of different 18650 batteries for mine to see if I can eek out a little more runtime. The stock battery is 2200mAh, but the replacements I ordered are 3500mAh. I will post another follow up vid if I see a drastic increase in battery life.

Great review! Reliability and durability are always the big downsides of going cheap, it's nice to see a long term review of the HF light. I always prefer to buy the best I can afford but the cheaper light would be great to throw in vehicle kits or just have multiples laying around.

Thanks Andrew! I completely agree, the Braun lights are excellent little beater lights - I actually just bought another one to put in the glovebox of my side by side. It'll definitely take a beating in there this summer bouncing around up on the mountain, so I'll be sure to post another video if I manage to kill one, haha.

This is a superb video! I do not like that the Streamlight uses a non-standard battery. Having the UV feature is great but it's an over-priced product. I do like the Switchblade but it's not worth it.

Thanks Dave! I agree that the Braun light is a great bang-for-the-buck option, but I will say that the Streamlight is built like an absolute tank. I did a rear brake job on one of our dodge dually pickups a couple weeks ago, and made a dumb mistake - I left the switchblade stuck up in the wheel well via the magnet. Took the truck out to bed the brakes in, switchblade came off, and I ran it over at about 40mph. It got pretty banged up and the light head even got bent a little...but it still works 100%. I don't think the Braun would've survived, although I'm not sure yet if I want to sacrifice one of them for a followup video, haha. 😎 Thanks for watching!

The Braun light is a great light I just wish the battery last longer. But the price of the Braun is 40 now unless you catch them on sell.
@AllThingsMech
@AllThingsMech Год назад
Yeah, prices have gone up across the board at harbor freight (and everywhere else). Definitely not something I'd buy unless it was on sale, but a decent deal for $25 or less.

Just FYI the 11 hour thing is labeled on the package as the tip light, but his half hour estimate for the main bar is wildly low. Out of curiosity I charged mine and then just left it on next to my desk on high until it died before making this comment. It lasted like two and a third hours continuously. This still isn't enough for a full day given that you'll be likely to leave the light on for extended periods when working and often end up forgetting about turning it off even if you don't need it for a bit. Though it's worth noting that the battery it comes with is a no-name on the lower end of capacity for the type. You can find name brand (Panasonic and Samsung) 18650 cells that have almost 50% more amp hours for only like 6 to 8 bucks, and a small charger for like ten bucks. One extra batteries and a charger is honestly enough for any normal use, by the time a second battery is dead the other one will be plenty charged to use.

I'll tell you now, the Braun does not hold up in a shop environment. The two main problems I have with it are the switch.... It fails... I've had five of these lights and they all fail. The other issue is the tip light... It ends up falling out. The Braun is not heavy duty, like... At all.

Both of mine are still going strong, so they aren't all trash. Luck of the draw with Chinese stuff I guess. Or, they switched manufacturing to a different factory with worse quality control, which wouldn't surprise me.

USB c tips are the same price so it’s annoying to have micro. They should add pivoting, a side magnet, both lights on at the same time, and a wireless magnetic charging station instead of that cheap plastic system they have.

I’m sorry, but I can’t agree with you about how well the Streamlight is engineered. I’ve owned many Streamlights since my first one around 1980 and they have historically been well engineered, professional grade lights. But no longer. For some unexplained reason, and you mentioned it, they are still using the fragile, cheap, antiquated micro USB connector for charging. So Unless you are able to use the Stinger wall charger (which is decent) you don’t want this or any other flashlight that relies in micro USB. I currently have two Streamlight door stops that I can’t recharge because of bent pins in the micro USB charging port. And they’re no longer under warranty. The mechanical attributes of the Streamlights are great. But until they replace that awful micro USB connector with the far more capable and durable USB C connector there’s no way this flashlight will find a home in my toolbox.
@AllThingsMech
@AllThingsMech Год назад
Definitely a fair point, and one that I've been very vocal about with Streamlight for several years now. I think they might finally be getting the hint - the new ProTac 2.0 and a couple other models use the USB-C interface. It remains to be seen if they'll re-engineer their older designs to accommodate the newer tech though. I sincerely hope they do. My switchblade was actually stolen about a year ago and I haven't replaced it yet for that very reason.
@Dave-ei7kk
@Dave-ei7kk Год назад
@@AllThingsMech I sure hope they do. I don’t think it would require much if any mechanical design work since the connectors are roughly the same size. It would require a redesign of the circuit board that contains the charging interface electronics. But nothing to invent here as the USB-C interface is well established and parts and supporting circuitry should be high volume off-the-shelf parts. Most likely all they’d have to revise is a small IC board layout to accommodate the new components within the current physical space inside the flashlight. I’m thinking of trying out the Astro Tools 52SL instead of the Streamlight Switchblade. The design of the light is similar but they have an innovative wireless charging dock and their USB port is USB-C. I have some of their earlier lights and they have been durable and useful but both feature the dreaded micro USB port for charging. So now that they have upgraded to USB-C I might give them a try for my shop.
@AllThingsMech
@AllThingsMech Год назад
@Dave very true. I don't have any idea if this is accurate or not, but I'd imagine that SL's bigger issue is massive production volume and a lot of remaining inventory to sell off before they re-release an updated design...nothing pisses off a distributor more than having two otherwise identical units to sell at the same time, which usually means that the older models will rot on the shelf while the new ones get sold. I could be completely out to lunch on that but it makes sense in my head, anyway! Astro definitely looks like a good option; I've been relatively pleased with the things I've purchased from them, although I have no first hand experience with their lights as of yet. I just stopped at harbor freight on a whim today and saw that they have an updated version of the Braun light now, and it addresses two of my biggest gripes from the first generation lights: it folds 180° in both directions so the light bar goes flat up against the handle, and it uses a USB-C charging port. It's also smaller but brighter at 500 lumens (although that doesn't mean much without a way to measure the actual output). All major wins in my opinion. I haven't even opened it yet but I'll be doing a video on it soon.
