Still loving mine too. If you recall, I got it the same week you got that one. I actually do enjoy sitting and watching videos and sharpening in hand like your showed. Very therapeutic
I've never been very good at sharpening. Too in a hurry. After watching "how too" videos for this device, I bought two, one in the house, one in the garage. Beautiful sharp edge on first try! Wow! From incompetent to expert just like that! I've now sharpened everything in sight. This thing is great!
I just got my first Chefs Knife a $14 Winco Stal, I want to keep it sharp so I ended up getting Work Sharp’s Pull Through. Going to just use it and not worry about ruining the profile of my blades. 🤷🏻♂️ 🔪
I have been free hand sharpening on stones and diamonds back and forth. For several years. I Bought this product over the weekend and it’s amazing what it can accomplish and the speed it does it
This is an absolutely brilliant bit of gear. I leave one at work as well as in my edc bag, and it's been a godsend! Not sure if you've tried the more comprehensive version of this (Guided sharpening system), but it's also an absolute winner!
I have both now, I got the guided sharpener before I learned how to sharpen by hand. I like it but I definitely recommend learning hand sharpening too. I just ordered this one for camping.
Just got one of these. I already had a guided system with a clamp, rods, and 5 stones, and despite that I'll be using the worksharp field sharpener to sharpen my knives from now on. I was able to take knives from too dull to cut paper, to shaving sharp in a few minutes each, and with almost no practice. I struggled with the decision for a while, because I already have a sharpening system, and several other sharpening tools and methods. I'm really glad I got one though, because none of them work as well and as fast as this. The rod/guide system will put a cleaner, factory-like edge on knives, but I have to set up rods, clamp the knife, oil the stones, etc. This may not get the perfect factory-like scratch pattern, but it will get a knife just as sharp, if not sharper, and it will do it in under 2 minutes. The guides will make it quicker, but the 25° ceramic guide will give you a secondary bevel. If you have the angle control, you don't have to use them, and I recommend setting your own angle to get better results. I strongly recommend this sharpener to anyone who has difficulty getting knives really sharp, or just wants to be able to sharpen a knife very well and very quickly while on the go.
The whole "move the stone, not the knife" technique is also how the boy scouts (and Ray Mears) teach you to whittle with a knife. Keep your knife arm static, brace it against your knee if you're seated/kneeling and pull the stick into the blade. If I ever end up buying this system that would feel almost natural to me from my time in scouts.
Exactly!! And once you get the motion down its very easy, and when i keep it kind of close to my vision i can see all the edge movements to adjust accordingly
I agree it is the perfect item to do a quick touch up out in the field. It is a product them have had out awhile and it just seems to fill a niche. Thanks for the review on the system and all your thoughts on it.
Once things I really like about worksharp is their educational videos. I didn't understand an apex from micro bevel when started my hobby a couple years ago
I about to order a Torx driver, KPL, Wiha Bits, worksharp field sharpener, work mat, and a strop today. I’ll be using your links. Thanks for these videos, I will try my hand at sharpening now and invest in a better one after I get the hang of it a bit! 20K crew!!
Ok cool, there's a lot of different stropping compounds and your going to have to buy more and replace it eventually, so choose the kind that best fits you, but good to know thank you
@@roccoisfat3184 yes you should use compound the leather is just the surface that holds the abrasive the compound is what works, this video is very old i rec you watch my newer videos, however i stiil hightly rec this product
@roccoisfat3184 yes it comes pre loaded with green compound, you can buy more very cheap at Sharpening supplies.com or Amazon, I'd recommend not going super cheap with green compound but it is very affordable
Great video!!! I love mine. I keep one on bench and one had a permanent spot in my tackle box. Great little system. I agree, work sharp puts out systems that just work...best bang for buck IMHO. Keep up the great content.
I have several other sharpening tool like stones even wheels but this is my go too sharpener now for cleaning the the sharpener I use a ERASER yes eraser for the diamond and ceramic edge even store the eraser inside the sharpener.
It can be seen in the first 0:30 that this tool relies on manually maintaining the correct angle on the edge while sharpening. This may work tor people who spend a lot of time sharpening knives, and will be able to maintain the required skill set. As a home cook, I will stick with the Lansky system, which maintains the correct edge angle automatically, and which I have used successfully for years.
Good review! I've thought about getting one, but I don't know that I really need it. I've been just holding my KME stones in hand and free handing lately, then finishing off with my Spyderco Doublestuff. Been pretty happy with my results. I still may get one to check it out though. If nothing else, it would be a good item to throw in my pack for camping.
@@NeevesKnives Same here. I actually don't remember the last time I used the full KME, but the stones are pretty good, and work fine to just hold in your hand. I've really started to like free hand now that I'm getting much better at it. I do have a cheap set of bench stones, but I much prefer to do hand held. I'm better at it that way too, I guess because I've done it that way more.
looking at one of these for my chef knives at work, $80 nzd so pretty cheap for a full package....im not really keen on spending much just to sharpen my knives but diamond stones will be nice
I keep seeing vids where people show off $1000 sharpeners and I just don't get it. I'm replacing a Spyderco Sharpmaker which I no longer have and think this just simply works. I keep watching videos trying to convince myself I should spend more on a sharpener because I own so many expensive knives, but after watching the results you are getting with this simple tool I'm ready to go to my local knife store and just get one for myself. And yes.....I will subscribe as well. Like your whole damn channel.
You can use both diamonds then strop in that case no worries on stropping, if you do go all the way through then you can still strop but if you dont take your plates off and clean them then you will get grt in your strop that could lead to scratches, but thats more for mirror edges thats done on other systems, so if you have a fresh polished edge from a kme, you might not want to use this strop after its been used a lot, but when your out in the field using your knife its the least of your worries
If you want to use it on a table just put a pin or nail in your table and put the hanger hole on it then it won't move around on you when your sharpening.
@@NeevesKnives that's the system I forwarded to work sharp as far as having a very simple stone carriage holder.....and their price point is spot on, I'm certain the cost of such a carrier wouldn't be high....the carrier on the precision adjust is 4" x 1/2" as far as stones go.... I need pester them more....lol
I’m not too well versed on RU-vid and would like to know if there is away to search a particular subject video on your home page instead of scrolling through the whole list. Thanks in advance for your response
So I have a playlist, if you go to my home page at the top scroll to the right you will see playlist hit that I have videos organized, some are mixed in with others just because it was sorta relevant. Also you can go to RU-vid home page or any page on RU-vid and use the search bar if you type in neevesknives and whatever your looking for it should pop up
@@NeevesKnives thank you. I thought to look if you did a video on work sharp professional precision adjust. Cause you seem to explain very thoroughly and simple for folks like me who are new in the field of sharpening knives. I also own this guided field sharpener and I sure did learn from this video. Very informative for me. Thanks again for your response
Diamond plates don't require much cleaning you just dust them off, the ceramic you can easily clean when it builds up with soap and water, or a rust eraser
Awesome review ! You should try using cardboard as a strop sometime Burrrfection has done it before and gotten a great edge on 1000 dollar kitchen knives that is lol
@@caseytyler8326 oh wow i could see that working i keep saying it but havent done it yet but im eventually going to make a denim strop like the ones rockstead makes
@@caseytyler8326 your supposed to put a piece of denim on wood with certain stropping compound, i want to do it with my venev compound, im not sure what they use but it has to be at a very low micron
It's odd. You know when you hear someone's voice for years? Maybe a radio DJ (kids; Google them if you're unaware of this term), and you finally see them and they look nothing like you pictured? I probably watched a couple dozen of these videos before ever seeing more than just hands, it was the same thing when I here. I expected fatter. Of course that's usually what I picture with knife guys. Though I'm not fat.
I couldn't not disagree with the other reviewers here more. Very frustrating and disappointing product. I started off with a blunt hunting knife and despite following the tutorials to the letter for over and hour - I still had a blunt hunting knife. Avoid this product.
Sounds like user error. Lol I took a rusted knife I found in a tool box that had chipped edges, cleaned it up, put a new edge on it with the 300 grit and within 30min of using this product I had an edge that went from dull as a butter knife to shaving. I'm sure I can make it sharper if I spent more time working with it and getting more aquatinted with using this tool.
I've recently purchased this and have restored an edge with multiple chips to nearly razor sharp on my first attempt. This is a very good sharpener for the price point.
I think it depends on the steel angle and knife. I have some knifes that I can get wicked sharp with this sharpener. I have a bushcraft knife that is very difficult to sharpen. The only way I can get it sharp is on another sharpening system and then I switch over to a very fine diamond stone to finish. I can touch it up with this however not nearly hair popping sharp like I can get with my other method. If you are still ending up with a blunt knife try giving it a steaper angle I've had success with that. But some sharpening systems are not for you like I cannot sharpen for the life of me on whetstones. Im pretty sure I'm keeping the same angle I've even used guides I've given up and found systems that work for me. But don't get discouraged with one system if you cannot get one knife sharp.
