Blood on the Fields
Work Song (Blood On The Fields)
February 21-23, 2013
Rose Theater
'Blood on the Fields' is Wynton Marsalis' oratorio on slavery. The piece was first performed to pack crowds in New York City in 1994. Its widespread recognition led Mr. Marsalis to be the first jazz composer to win the Pulitzer prize.
The Orchestra performed it on February 21st through February 23rd of 2013 after their winter tour of the United States. Because of the pieces importance to jazz history we had to play it during our 25th anniversary.
This song features Paula West and Kenny Washington on vocals and Eric Reed on piano.

Twenty six years on Blood On The Fields remains essential listening for dwellers both inside and outside the world of Swing. Fields? We've had blood on the streets in 2020: the cycle of hate must give way to a cycle of love. The recognition of a Pulitzer was tremendous but some people in Stockholm should have considered adding another accolade. Blood On The Fields is a genuinely innovative master work of global importance. Love this madly.

Dear Maestro Wynton Marsalis, You are a genius of music! I love you with all my heart your fantastic performances and your extraordinary compositions! I love specially your masterpiece BLOOD ON THE FIELDS. This wonderful music means to me as much as the music of Bach and Gershwin. GOD BLESS YOU! GOD BLESS AMERICA! Faithfully Yours, Serban Nichifor, Romanian composer
