I love making things out of "nothing", any scrap material around the place and making it work. I even use tree branches to make handles for doors and drawers! Thank you for JustBS Woodworking for your video. Love the "scrap" work, love using anything around the place.

I love working with scrap. Like you said, you constantly have to problem solve. If you wax the drawer bottoms and the slides, they will slide smoother. If it were me, I'd put the thicker drawer face as the bottom drawer. Giving it a sort of pyramid effect. Great video and you have a new subscriber. Feel free to criticize one of my videos. I love it. God bless.

I can’t do with scrap wood haters. It’s a great material to work with and learn the basics for us newbies. I would be a broken man if I made some of the mistakes I have on a piece of Oak or Walnut.
@justbswoodworking
@justbswoodworking Год назад
Absolutely. If I made the mistakes I make on a £300 piece of oak I certainly wouldn't be able to laugh at myself!

A tip for future drawers/runners: instead of wax you can use iron-on edge banding to drastically reduce friction. I've done so twice, once on the runners, once on the drawer bottoms, and it works very well!
@justbswoodworking

Not something I'd ever thought of but sounds like it would work a treat. I'm also game for anything that is a cheap and easy alternative. Cheers buddy.

Great job! Perfect use of the KISS principle. Nothing like using all of the scraps for useful things. :) I have to say I'm really enjoying these projects you have been doing. It has given me a few ideas and even my wife is asking me to make things out of pallets now!

I've really been enjoying them too. Doing RU-vid is the hardest thing my brain has ever had to figure out. Trying to understand what people want to see is impossible but all I know is, I've really enjoyed the challenge of upgrading the garage using only scraps. Cheers mate

FINALLY, someone made simple drawers. Every other video i watched said easy/simple drawers, but they were anything but. Thanks for the video
@joshuathorson8813

One tip that doesn't add work: have the sides of the box act as a perimeter around the bottom and nail from the sides. That way gravity isn't aligned with the nail direction, you'd have to sheer the nails/glue to push the bottom out the bottom
@justbswoodworking
@justbswoodworking Год назад
I agree. It's how I would normally build drawer boxes but I didn't have very wide pallet boards. I know I could have glued several together but I wanted to try an keep it simple. Cheers for watching buddy
@mikeking7470
@mikeking7470 Год назад
Shorten the screws in your Ikea handles and they will flush up nicely (or washers on the back). You could also have thicknessed both sides of all your boards to regularize dimensions and clean up the wood. And ran all the sides through your saw. My thicknesser has junk blades in it so I don't mind hitting a bit of embedded metal once in a while.
@justbswoodworking
@justbswoodworking Год назад
You're absolutely right. I did consider adding a plate for the handles or using an angle grinder on them. In the end, I decided it would do for now and I'll fix it later (I won't... I never do 🤣)

I have been thinking about starting a bit of woodworking as a hobby. I overhink a lot though haha. These videos are great to watch. Cheap or even free wood is perfect to start with. They would end up as chipboard or firewood anyway. Giving it a second life is great. Maybe a short life but anyway. Make the big mistakes with the scrap. Learn and then progress to nicer material.
@justbswoodworking
@justbswoodworking Год назад
That's exactly my thought process. I'd love to work up to using nicer wood, but it's so expensive. If I ever get to the stage where I'm not making 15 mistakes every project, I will take the leap! Cheers mate

Great video. Your little bit at the end was very well said. Also when you used the 2 sides of the drawer box to get the cut, my mind just blew at the simplicity of the trick and the fact I had never thought of it or seen it in my short time working with wood..
@justbswoodworking
@justbswoodworking Год назад
Cheers mate. When I first started, I used to measure everything. That's great if you have really accurate tools. I don't! So I've found the best way is to just 'measure' using the project itself! Appreciate you taking the time to comment.
@viracocha03
@viracocha03 Год назад
@@justbswoodworking yes, James Wright always says that aswell. It made things so much easier and more fun once I simplified some of the techniques I was learning. RU-vid can be bothe a blessing and a curse in the sense of over complicating things.
@viracocha03
@viracocha03 Год назад
And I realize I said I had never seen the work used to measure in my first comment, I meant that I had not seen it used that specific way for a drawer, when I learned dovetails, after I realized it was easier to use the peice to mark instead of a gauge
@justbswoodworking
@justbswoodworking Год назад
I can't wait to have a go at dovetails. Going to need something a little more substantial than pallet wood for that though

@@justbswoodworking Im lucky, i am getting 7t long hardwood pallets, mostly Oak and Maple but also some Birch. Cleaning and squaring it up with hand tools is a little time consuming and can be frustrating but my first build was a mortise and tenon TV stand made from the oak and besides a few nail holes, it looks clean, sleek and beautiful. I appreciate the time you take to respond to your viewers, as well as all the work you put into videos. Cheers.

You should make another push stick, these types are not really great for table saw use. You need one that supports the work piece more horizontally and allows you to have your hand on top of it, they are much easier to use than the one you have now. You can just make one out of any type of wood.
@justbswoodworking
@justbswoodworking Год назад
I hate using them for the exact reasons you've just said. So it would have a small notch for the 'push' part with the part that sits over the piece being longer? Cheers mate

@@justbswoodworking If you want some examples on YT you can look up: katz moses push stick, fisher's shop push stick or steve ramsey's push bock which is a simplified version of the grrripper :) Any of those will give you much better control by allowing you to apply pressure down on the work piece.

@@justbswoodworking No problem, a table saw is scary but the right push block can make it a lot safer :) I really like the ones with a sacrificial bottom/back part that you just push through the blade, it works so much better than the long push sticks that come with the saws.
