Working 41 head of Calves! 

Can you answer a question for me? Do you have any kind of pets? And to answer your question, I think how I raise my animals is totally torture free. I will say there are some farmers that are cruel but that is not most of us. I give them vaccines just as people vaccinate their children and babies to look out for their future health. And I band them because I would like to see you walk into a pen full of bulls and come out without an injury. There are just some things city people will never understand simply because they have not been around farm animals enough to know. And I would be happy to have a conversation about things because I believe everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but as soon as it shifts from a debate to a hateful argument ✌️I’m out.

On The Farm yes I have pets. Why is that? Your calves aren’t your pets so that is completely irrelevant. I don’t understand how you can think that banding does not cause any suffering. As a male, do you really think this wouldn’t hurt? You chose to bring them into this world by forcibly impregnating their mothers and then you use “well city folk have no idea about how dangerous bulls are” this is why I watch all these farming videos on RU-vid so thanks for the education. And treating them “humanely”, do you think that there is anything wrong with sending them to slaughter when they are perfectly fine and healthy animals but are having their lives taken from them against their will?. Do you ever feel bad or any guilt when you take them to the sale yard knowing full well what the end result will be after rearing them?

My reason for asking if you have pets is because, assuming you have cats or dogs, they are probably spayed and neutered because pet owners that do not spay or neuter are considered “irresponsible”. And sure they are asleep while the procedure happens but they are in extreme discomfort afterwards mostly due to the stitches and getting part of their body cut out. So you caused extreme pain on the animals that are part of the family. And as a male, obviously there is would be pain, but after they lose circulation their balls become totally numb and after two or three days they can’t feel them at all. Obviously it’s not fun taking them to the sales barn when their time comes because I have spent 2 hours with them every single day and watched them grow up. There are even a few of them that I would call “pets” but they also have to go. They are going to be used for meat which is obvious so all I can do is raise them to the best of my ability and give them the best life they could have before they are sent off. It is just part of the circle of life, people are omnivores and that’s a fact people cannot argue, it is how our digestive system is set up. Sure people can now live on a vegan diet, but they have to take supplements to get the same things meat eaters get from meat. I’m sure you could talk about the supplements you have to take, honestly I am will admit I am not well informed on that topic. And no, I am NOT against vegans, it is their choice and they can eat whatever they would like, but I also expect vegans to respect my choice to eat meat. That doesn’t mean they can’t try to change my mind, and the same goes for meat eaters.

I totally agree with you, this person clearly has no experience of agriculture and relies on rigged evidence she found on some page on the internet. Keep up the good work.

We only had 3 that had horns and we dehorned them when they were younger. We just use the horn cutters and pull out the artery. They are all half beef calves so the rest were naturally polled.

I probably should have been wearing gloves but I always think they get in the way. Thank you!

My dad has about 175 momma cows sometimes a little more and a little less. My dad just runs the farm on the side and I help him out and pay rent since I run my 8 cows and bottle calves on the place. Hope that answered it!

I do not have a specific ratio. I just buy a feed from the feed store in bulk. For calves you will want the protein at 10-16%. When they get close to 500lbs 8% protein feed works fine. For young calves the more pellets there are the better, you don’t want a lot of grain dust because it can cause some respiratory issues. Hope that kind of helped!

Anytime after two months of age. I normally wait till about 3 months for their first round of vaccine and then wait another month or two for their second round.

I kept 18 heifers out of this group and they should be bred. They will be pretty checked in a few months and then I’ll see how they do as mothers. If I like how they do as cows, then I may keep a few more back out of my current group. This first group is just a test 👍
