What would your best work conditions look like? Share with me below!

In the Netherlands most people working for a company are payed according to a CAO, which is a Collective Work Agreement coupled to a structure of scaled wages (het loongebouw). This loongebouw gives the wages for different jobs, from the receptionist, cleaning lady to the sous-chef of the financial department. Executives and the echelon beneath that mostly have job agreements on a personal basis. This means that your job probably is classified into a certain scale depending of several things as skills, responsibility etc. If you find that you deserve more pay than your co workers you have to ask if you are classified in the right scale. Within the scale there is normally also a dependence of how many years you have this position, and if you are very young there is sometimes a youth scale too. The classification is a matter between the representatives of workers and the company, often the workers unions and the directors, off course with their specialists, as is the height of the wages. The latter is normaly every year a negotiation, but there are CAO's with a longer time span. Big companies have their own CAO, but smaller companies are represented in branches, like Metaal or Klein Metaal. The minister for labour can declare a CAO binding for all companies within a branch. This structure is set up to prevent discrimination and favouritism and to get a more honest pay and more security for the worker and prevent distort competition between the companies.

Thanks for the additional input! From my experience in the architecture industry not every company is obliged to follow the rules & guidelines of CAO. This has caused several issues in the past.

@@MakingitinHolland The CAO 2019 - 2020 (until march 2021) is declared as binding for all companies working as architectural firm. Sometimes an employer does not met the conditions of the CAO which is unlawfull. It can be settled which is better for the working conditions, but else it is possible to go to the judge for repairs. Normally the employee can get legal assistance from a lawyer (from his Union).

This is very helpful to know! I didn’t know you could take legal action in that sense. Thank you.

About better pay for more skilled work: I myself find it hard to compare different sorts of labour in terms of hard or less hard work. If you have a strong body for instance you have less problem to do fysical labour and other way round if you have a strong mind intellectual demands are not so hard. There is however an attempt to make at least a scale of jobs with help of work classification where points are given for different aspects of a job. There are handbooks for this and people have special training to do this as just as possible. It will be no surprise that the result is as close as the status quo however, it is a compromise between employer and employee unions. About the age related part of the payscale: every new employee have to adjust to his job. It is scientific fact that everyone takes about one year to become real productive. There after you can see it as a loyalty bonus (from the employers view) or as an earned partly repayment of the over value produced by the employee (by the employees view). I think you stumbled here on the real difference in culture: don't think that you are better than anyone else, doe normaal dan doe je gek genoeg. To try to better yourself by belittle your co-workers is soo wrong. We call it "maten naaien": screwing ones buddies.

Work meetings are rather long, yes. That's because the Netherlands is a country based on consensus. A consensus has to be reached, that's why a decision is always made through a compromise, after having heard everyone's opinion and having discussed it. That's why meetings take much time, the reason why the Dutch are consensus-based lies in our history and our dealings with the water

well, if one needs 14 minutes to make 6 points, it's not strange their meetings take long

Interesting. Wrt your closing point, my experience, as a Dutchie working in a relatively international setting (a University): a lot of my expat colleagues invest very little in their new home. If you want to integrate, you must speak the language. Not just to pass on information, but to integrate. Language is where it all starts. Many non-Dutch think they get bye because so many Dutch speak English so well. They might do so, but it is not their native tongue, so you'll never get native if you cannot speak Dutch.
