Jake, I found your channel in 2015 when I was deciding what to study and learning about what it's like to get a degree in the UK (I'm American). I was greatly inspired by your videos and got my degree in Computer Science in 2018. I have so many fond memories of watching your journey and still watch to this day! We love to see you post. Thanks a ton for everything
Hi Jake, random comment: I started watching your videos maybe 7 years ago, about life at Cambridge; at the time I was a wee lad and had no intention of going but now I've rediscovered your videos only a few days after result's day, discovering I'll be starting at St John's College, Cambridge in October! Thanks for the stroll down memory lane, your videos are lovely little time capsule.
I've followed your videos since you got your mac mini years ago which inspired me to get a mac mini. I then watched your Cambridge videos and got inspired to study CS at university where I'm graduating this year and moving to London after. Absolutely crazy how much you have inspired much of my life and we don't even know each other. Cheers Jake.
I am new here. It's really refreshing to see a real programmer doing real work. Often what is represented is a show off about how much programmers get to socialize, play games, or eat company provided snacks. I am interested in the process revolving around the work. Thank you, this is really good to see!
Hi Jake, welcome back! I wanted to ask you about the social aspect of the remote work culture. As a remote software engineer, I find it difficult to feel connected and synced with my team. Not only because we have much fewer stand-ups than most companies, but also because there's no dedicated time for informal conversations or activities. As a result, we don't communicate much, and on most days, there's nothing beyond work-related stuff. When I saw the planned social sessions at Monzo, I was intrigued. Are they as fun and essential as they seem to be? What are you personally getting out of them? I'm also interested in hearing how these meetings came to be: was it you and the team that took the initiative to start organizing it, or is it a company-wide approach? Thanks, and keep up the good work!
I'd be interested in this too... obviously some people don't want to hang around after hours (when socials are often organised for), would be nice if companies offered some dedicated time during the work-day to do something. I expect it's more of a culture/people issue to sort out...
@@jakewrightnet why dont you do more web dev in xx min series, your css was awesome when I watched it when I was starting to learn. Can you do React in xx minutes if you know that? Thanks
this has come just in time! I'm in my first software engineering grad job out of uni and it's so interesting and beneficial hearing how it's all done in a different workplace, I've only ever known remote work so even just your routine is great insight :)
Look like fun works! My short goal is to Backend Engineer because I love data I'm so happy watching your videos! Inspirable, and it's one of my motivations.
Idk why but your videos are so comforting to me and interesting. I literally know nothing about computer science or software engineering but it’s still interesting to see your day to day!
I discovered your video today and really like the smoothness in your editing and the progression. Obviously, it's one of the logical ways software engineers operate; beyond just the world in the device to the real-life systems. Great one, Jake!
I'm aware Monzo had to let go of a lot of engineers over the past year. Would be interested to hear about your experience of that and how it impacted your work etc
Jake! You're alive! As always, glad to see you appear to be doing well. Your videos are a nice mix of calming, with an occasional sprinkle of valuable insight (like your criteria for what a good job needs - which I found really useful as a way of framing thinking about work). Looking forward to seeing more videos from you.
Do you have any resentment that you are compelled to socialize with your co-workers at the end of a busy day, instead of being free to do what you want with your time?
Not at all, we only have after work socials once a month, and it's not like I have anything else to do these days since we've been in lockdown for so long.
Please post more videos! You look quite happy working from home, glad to see you have a proper chair (Aeron). I have the same chair and would be dead without it.
I love that you upgraded you setup from the last time you showed us. Its much better now with the ergonomic mouse, keyboard and of course the Herman Miller aeron.
Yay! Please do keep us updated with how things go, lovely. I've been finding that working remotely in my new job that I started in November has... not been the most ideal of introductions, and I absolutely hate working from home. I struggle getting those personal/work balances in (been finding myself in the wrong headspace at the wrong time!), so I've elected to go into the office one day a week. Cannot wait to not see these four walls during the day for once...
Jake, I really love your plainliness like @Anders said to sugar coating. I pray you grow even higher in your position. I just love this video man. Lots of emotions
Glad you’re wanting to make videos again, Jake! Always love watching them no matter the content. Will you do more life/apartment update type stuff too?
Sick video. Would love to see more content on "Life @monzo" and productivity/remote culture. Just realized that you live very close to my place too. Those mid-day river walks are regenerating
HI! I'm a new subscriber to your channel so it's great to see some fresh content. By the way it's amazing to watch your older videos nowadays. Thanks for sharing your storys with us. Greetings from Poland!
Interesting to hear about your development processes and various meetings etc. Looking forward to hearing more on that and integrating those into the team I work with!
I work in at a Payroll company in US as a backend developer and deal with productions incidents on general ledger quite frequently. I got alerted suddenly when I heard the words ledger and incident in you video suddenly :)
Heeyy, Jake !! I really missed you !! Thanks so much for your back in channel ! Please, in the next video share of your best motivation in life ever !?
Nice to see you back! Recently started my software dev job, and similar to you, its standup, meetings, and then some coding time. We also have an all hands and socials so that's fun
dude can you upload more tutorials about programming? i agree with someone on the comment section saying u just cant create a channel and upload amazing videos and just vanish away. bruh your tutorials is what we need and they are so f*king spot on! Please heed our request if you have time to spare! Thank You for those amazing tutorials!!
Thank you so much for really talking about what you actually worked on and talked about in meetings. It’s always annoying to watch a day in the life video that’s exclusively shots of sitting at a desk and eating snacks.
I moved to London from Australia in February last year so excited for my software dev role in the big city, only to work from home and never leave Stratford for a year 😂
That team seems rather large, I feel like trying to practice an agile way of working with a team that size is a hinderance. Rather two teams of 4-8 people would work much better imo.
Any chance we will see more Go videos? Would be great to learn more. Maybe REST APIs or best practices? Started Go yesterday and your videos have been the best!
Jake, consider those Luminoodle 6500k USB Bias lighting led strips for putting around the rear edges of your monitors. I have them around both my 32 inch monitors and that’s all the lighting I use and it is plenty, plus there’s no glare on the screens as the light is behind them. They are only about £20 each on Amazon, according to the length you need. Probably saves their cost in electricity as well and I run them from the USBs on the monitors. Also have a more expensive MediaLight one on my TV, which is also very worth it.
