As Labour’s party conference gets into full swing in Liverpool this week, we look in detail at a key part of the government’s employment rights package: working from home. Keir Starmer says flexible and hybrid working is better for productivity while large companies like Amazon have ordered their staff to return to the workplace five days a week. Who's right? And what does it mean for where you will work in future?

Been working for my employer 15 years, entirely remote since 2014. No one said a thing about WFH until it became a culture war victim of the American Right, post pandemic. I can say without a doubt I and my coworkers workloads have increased dramatically, while our pay has not, *specifically* because WFH is used *constantly* as a bargaining lever in favor of the employer.

Precisely - I've partly worked from home for years, and years in several different roles/employers - as in if we've needed to get a piece of work/project banged through really quickly, then being able to concentrate and focus on it at home without the distractions of immediate work colleagues - plus he availability sticker on your head that attracts lazy questions and constant disruptions from all and sundry. As is, I can deal with things morning noon or night, if I need to/when it suits (Being bipolar this can be really beneficial at times when being ,erm 'overly productive and creative' haha) - But I often have to work at these times just because the pressure /expectation has risen so much.. Yet we're now being requested to go back in to the office far more. and told how much of a 'favour' it is for us to be able to work from home. As it's an hour and a half each way for me to get there, that extra hour or two where I would sometimes spend finishing something off if necessary. is far less likely to happen. Not sure what the emp[oyer is getting out of this apart from a power trip - Surely it would make more sense to judge an employee on their output/quality - regardless of where this was carried out? It's how I look at the staff under me. When I observe people actually in the workplace, many look to spend half of the time either being disrupted, disrupting others, or making cups of tea like Mrs. Doyle on marching powder!

I work remotely from the rest of my team anyway, so going into the office becomes performative nonsense if you barely have a personal interaction in the building you're are based in. Just Teams calls I could have taken in my quiet home office.

we built a economy based on selling latte's to office workers and property portfolios for expensive office space. (with mostly tory mp's investing in the latter) I suspect this is the realy issue here (the same lot who produced the book calling British workers layabouts and then later wrecked the economy whilst in gov)

Been working from home since the pandemic. We did not renew our office lease after realising we are more productive working from home so we can get on with doing the job.

I would rather deal with at home people..I am bit hard of hearing, the background noise of call centres make it a long call.often sorry for them.!

This same thing became an issue for me starting in 2018. Prior to this I worked in an office and most of my meetings were in person. Then I got a large foreign client and all my meetings moved to Zoom/Teams. Suddenly the office and its ambient noise became intolerable.

I'd say I was less productive in the office than I am at home. In my lovely study (with a view out of the window) I can have peace & quiet, or put on music to help me focus without bothering anyone else. In the office it's noisy, people interrupt me constantly for a chat etc... I have to burn petrol to get there, I end up eating takeaways & microwave meals from the supermarket. I feel on edge & hate every moment in the office. I see more of my family, get more sleep etc... I'm sure some people slack off but it soon becomes obvious who that is. My philosophy is that I don't want to risk being forced back to the office, so I pull my weight, so as not to give any excuse to my employers (as well as not want to leave work for my colleagues). The only downside is not really getting to know new staff & a loss of camaraderie but I find the younger generation tends to have their heads stuck in their mobiles & far less chit-chat than there used to be in the "good old days".

Eliminate office rent, electricity and utilities for office, security and maintenance costs, taxes on office. No brainer.

I have had to deal with people working at home and all I could hear are kids, noises and I couldn’t hear the dude talking, this has happened many times and is so annoying. A stay home work on a Friday is ok but, sorry this is a bit much, last week I had a dude eating his lunch while trying to talk to me.

And I've had to deal with people in busy call centres and noisy offices - that problem is down to the tech being used and the environment. Also people in offices eat lunch too - not doing it on a call is simply being professional and that should be weeded out by management whether they are in office or wfh.
