You forgot to mention that the parties in Brazil dont have a specific time to end either. It goes on till the last person is still drinking beer.

I loved the video! I really like many things in american culture but I really prefer relationships like we have in Brazil. In Northeast Brazil is not uncommon if you go to a party hosted by "a friend of your friend" even the host do not know you are going (And if you are the host, you invited "John" to go to your place and "John" invited "Mike", who you don't know). I just love to meet new people that way :)

Zoe I´ve been teaching English in Petrópolis, Brazil for 16 years, since my relatives are from here, and I´ve seen so many of the things you´ve mentioned. I think it´s less formal and more openly social. I, for the most part find Brazilians here to be quite generous with me, because when they like someone then they almost adopt you... It´s cool that you´re learning Portuguese. I always knew it but had forgotten to speak it for years...It´s not easy

I am Brazilian and have lived in US. I found your video very accurate and objectively driven. Even if you stress quite clearly that these were your opinions, based on your personal experience, your observations are still very easy to generalize and do say much about important aspects of Brazilian culture. Kudos!

Hey Zoe, very interesting account. I guess we relativize everything here, everything changes with context here and be sensible to these changes of context is paramount to navigate brazilian work and social environment. I'm brazilian and although i like it sometimes it's too much. I lived in europe for a while and when i returned here i got surprised how much you have to be careful to not hurt everyone's feelings. Sometimes more objectivity is nice!

It is interesting to see how you got the collective thing inside groups..it is totally true and the comment about e-mails is also true....brazilians used to think "if it is important you call, you dont email" and email is a "document" the protocolize what you are doing...

OMG you nailed it!!!! Such an accurate and impressive overview of how our Brazil really is. Well done!!! As a brazilian, i must thank you for such an honest and kind overview of our business environment. We must come together and face the pros and cons of others people culture...THE GOOD AND THE BAD...As long as in the end, we come together, forget about our differences and celebrate together. THAT'S WHAT BRAZILIAN VIBE IS ALL ABOUT!!!

Thank you for sharing your experience. I'm brazilian and is funny how things that is very natural for us is a whole new world for you. I worked in the business sector and we do have companies that have this kind of idea of start a meeting late. In a certain way it really sucks, but there's a bunch of companies that do not tolerate that anymore. And if your job is something that has a high value on a company people may change to another one if organizational culture let them be more efficient. I've seen managers been penalized for this kind of habbit and working on a private bank people who work this way do not last for a long time. But the thing is that we have a very vertical hierarchy in business (as an australia told me once). The boss could call you at anytime, you should not let an-email without an answer for long period of time i it comes from a person like a manager, boss (but yes, it is used like a document in many cases). For many foreigners this cimented structure does not help with business, specially because people could not contribute to the company, show what should change in order to the things work better. But from my personal experience, my mother-in-law passed away recently and all of my girlfriend working mates travelled about 200 km (125 miles) to the funeral to show their condolences. My sister-in-law also had about 8 friends from university at the funeral (and they travelled from a further distance). So, yes, we do kind create a bond with people from our work. Sometimes that can turn into a friendship even after you change your job.

Hi Zoe, so I'm American and I have been living in Brazil for the past 7 years. I was curious to hear other American's experiences here in Brazil. I'm glad to here that you had a good experience here. But unfortunately for some of us (Americans) the reality here is harsh and cruel. And you were very nice when describing the country and the people here. Hope you have many more good experiences.

I would recommend doing it during University because often times you can get your internship visa through a partner school. Personally, I did a study abroad and while I was in Brazil I applied to nearly 50 positions through the abroad school's website. It is not an easy process, but very worth while!

It’s so sad you feel that way. I’m sure had I grown up there, perhaps I would feel the same way. I grew up in the US and anytime back in Brasil was great for me. São Paulo, Marilia, and Bertioga were nice. I think when your fed up with where you live, you find all the negative unfortunately. In the US there are many areas that have lots of homeless and trash too. People aren’t that great here either. Cold and fake.

I grew up in Boston. I loved to visit Brasil, but have been living here for 9 years and it is horrific. gangs and police teaming up to fight rival gangs... a government run amok... crime out of control...I almost walked in front of a gangster who started shooting at another gangster... it[s hard to remove the memory of his enormous silver pistol... anyway, you get the idea...
