Working LEGO Combination Safe

JK Brickworks

A working combination safe built out of LEGO bricks. The lock works just like any typical 3 number combination lock. I have also designed it so that it is impossible to take it apart without knowing the combination or physically breaking pieces.
Instructions and more information on how it is constructed can be found on my website.

There's like 12 possible combinations to try so it's not overly hard to brute force the combination. If you replace the code discs with custom parts which can be locked in other directions but 90 degrees, the count of possible combinations goes much higher.

How are the bricks free spinning with enough friction so they don't immediately fall to their heaviest side? Or are they just balanced really well?

The 'disks' are mounted using friction pins, so they will stay in place unless you are actively moving them.

JK Brickworks is that why there is no gap between disks 2 and 1 (where 1 is on the right as we look)? great build by the way!
@JKBrickworks

After not seeing this for a while until now, I realized that you actually could take it apart without damaging the pieces. Using something thin enough like a technic axle through the holes where the pins are, you could push them out and proceed to deconstruct it from there.
@abominabletruthman
@abominabletruthman 5 лет назад
It is hard to tell with the safe in this video what the exact type of Technic pins are that he used, but this issue is addressed in the V2 of the safe on his website. The blue pins in this newer version are the long ones that have a ridge a third of the length across that prevent them from being pushed out in either direction when sandwiched between two Technic bricks.

What about pulling off the deadbolt knob? The gear would fall into the safe, and from there you can probably take the smooth piece off the deadbolt, as well as the jagged piece that the gear moves (with a small stick or screwdriver perhaps, without breaking anything), and can probably wiggle it until the long piece comes off, and can then just take the deadbolt clear out.
@JKBrickworks
@JKBrickworks 8 лет назад
+LunaticMS It's designed so that the axles holding on the dial and deadbolt knob cannot be removed or pushed in (I'm using relatively new axles with stoppers on them). Good idea trying to approach it from the deadbolt. You can remove the tile off the deadbolt, but you will most likely break something if you try to separate the plates making up the rest of it.
