I watch your videos every weekend like clockwork, and I notice one thing most of all. You are a good guy, solid. I say this from watching how you treat your critters, treat your wife and now Eli! (Good job Eli, BTW, best video ever!). I just enjoy watching and listening to you go through the day.

Warrent, of all your cool tools the one I'd like the most is that crane!! I bought a '91 D5C and the rails and sprockets are toast. The guy ran it under too much tension so the pads and flat part of the rails are decent, and I think I can rotate the pins and bushings and change sprockets to give the undercarriage about 85 percent. Everyone wants me to spend five grand for new stuff so they can clean up on ripping me off on the metal recycling, and I'm sick of them!! That crane would sure be a help!! Love your videos! Wish I had your energy level!!

This type of job is back breaking physical work that takes all the energy out of the body. Just crawling under the equipment several times a day while not to mention handling the heavy parts this fellow is working with zaps all the energy out of the body. This fellow is one tough hombre and seems to be one heck of a good mechanic. He's not a technician since all they do is swap parts. This guy fixes things using what he has available; whether parts provided by a supplier or a quick bush fix where he doesn't have the right parts. I appreciate the work he does and understand the physical aspects most folks don't understand or have even considered doing. He's the type of fellow I'd hire in a heart beat because he gets the job done. No millennial type attitude here. This guy earns every cent he charges. Thanks for the video and sharing.

I'd like to suggest some good dowel pins, same thread as the bolts you are using. I know with the mix of machines you'd probably have a decent set when you're done but that hub would slip right on with some pins. Stop fighting it, cut some heads off some bolts and save em.
@westerntruckandtractorrepa1353
I can't have every special thing for every job, if all I did was undercarriage work yeah I would have them. I work on a wide variety of equipment, for all the stuff you guys say I got to have I would need to tow a 53 foot dry van full of special tools to every job I do.
@jdboy9
@jdboy9 5 лет назад
Tom has a decent suggestion. I realize it is hard to accept suggestions or advice sometimes. Dowels would make the job much easier. You could keep the stuff at your shop and take it with you when you know you will need them...... The work you do is hard. He is just trying to help.

There was an old adage, "You can tell the quality of a surgeon by the size of the incision." Having good access to the objective makes the quality of the job better. By moving the track, you have full access to do the repair without making any compromises or not seeing an issue that should be resolved. Stick to your standards.

I watched a CAT mechanic do this job on a 65E. He used three pieces of 3/4" all-thread (about 3-feet long) through both idler hub flanges. Then he put each half of the front idlers on and pulled them in by threading the nuts down the all-thread. It was easy to hang the idler halves because the all-thread extended out beyond the side of the track. The guy had it down to a science... wouldn't even let me help. Hope this helps.
@davidallinson2501
@davidallinson2501 5 лет назад
A couple of 8" long pieces of threaded bar screwed into the bolt holes in the hub would probably make it easier to get the drum aligned. Some may call it a stabbing guide. Hell of a job you do having to work on your own all the time. Don't really envy you.
