Working with Olympus 35 RD The assemble process and other details

In this video about the Olympus 35 RD I will show the assemble process and there will also be many other details during the assemble.
I found out that there was a spring that was falling out of place, it was why the shutter button didn't work as it should, so I separate the lens assembly from the advance / slow gear assembly and found out what was wrong, and then corrected it to work correct again.
At 1:31:35 there are some extra info about the CdS light sensing cell on the front, and the connection to the shutter speed ring, because I did not know that early in the assemble process, because I do not have a repair manual for this camera, but one have to be aware of that when assemble the camera.

Hey Kenneth, thank you very much for doing this series! Just as you, I have not found much info online to repairing this camera. I got mine for free from friends where it was just a pretty paperweight, got it cleaned, but now it needs service again to work reliably. So this time I wanted to do it myself, thinking it would be a good exercise. This is my second camera that I open to tinker with the mechanisms (first one was a Mamiya RB67 that just wouldn't fire) and I must say it's pretty complicated indeed. But I'm very glad that you share your experience on RU-vid, that really helps! As to the CdS problem that you mentioned at the end: I was about to comment on that, because I saw that there was a gap between the front element and the plastic lens face. But now that I got it closed properly I noticed a piece of dust in the middle of the front lens group, so I'll have to take it apart again to clean it. But with the help of your videos this won't be too hard.

Hello and a big thank you! Thanks to your videos I was able to restore completely my 35RD but unfortunately you did not address the functioning of the CDS cell and on my device it is the only thing that is very bad. I did multiple searches to find a new cell, or repair it. And I found nothing concrete. I love this outfit so much I don’t want to give up. Do you have any advice?

Hi Mike, I'm currently working on fixing the shutter speed ring of my Olympus 35 RD, do I need to strip the camera as you e done in order to reach the shutter speed timer or can i just take out the lens group as you have done?

Hey Kenneth, thanks a lot for this video. I hadn't wrestled with one of these particular cameras before and managed to totally tear it down, clean, lubricate and fix all the issues with mine. I'm no stranger to camera repairs but this one was a little different. Thanks again

I recently bought an RD with a sticky shutter and was able to repair it thanks to your helpful videos. It was certainly one of the more difficult cameras I've worked on, no thanks to Olympus' love of thread lock! I now have a fully working RD that cost me next to nothing!

Hello I I have been watching some of your videos so I could clean my Mamiya super deluxe (fixed lens rangefinder) because when I bought it the shutter did not work. Some videos have been very helpful for disassembling and after I cleaned it with contact cleaner shutter worked (did not completely disassemble the shutter blades). After one week of sitting on the shelf the shutter stuck again, so I just removed the front glass to acces it and with a gentle push of the blades it worked. After that first push everything worked fine, but I think if I put it away for a few days it will stuck again. Do you have any advice for the cleaning completely disassembling the shutter blades?

Hello, mikeno62, i'm presently re-assembling my oly 35rd after a cleaning of the shutter blades (thanks to your so precious video :) ). Did you forget to put the first back lens under the shutter housing ? There are two back lenses, right ? But you only put one in your video, wouldn't you have an extra lens at the end ? Thx for all this documentation anyway.

One question about this video: is the product you use for the little metal ball the Super Lube synthetic multi-purpose grease ? Could another kind of grease work, as it is not so easy to find (at least in France) ? Thank you ! Clément

Thanks Clément, you can good synthetic grease it's not so important what name it has, even if it's made for cars or bikes. But it should not be too thic.k

Guys how to unscrew second lens element. Its super tight. I used spanner wrench, but no luck. Don’t want to make any damage to the camera

Unfortunately it just takes brute force. I used acetone and a soldering iron to heat up the metal but I'm doubtful that any of that actually helped. In the end it took me 5 days straight of man handling the lens elements to get all of them off.

Great Videos... Can I ask you about cleaning fungus from Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 VC? There is huge fungus in small back optical of this lens. There is a group optical lens and I cant open it because the case is plastic solid. I need Your help to guide me how to open it and how to divide the group of this optical lens. If the lens case is made of plastic you should be very careful because it break easy, but you can try to open the case with a "Dremel tool", it is the same I sometimes do when I try to clean a lens.

I always use this diy tool to cutting plastic but I worry if I use it to cut grouping lens plastic case. Please give me Your Advice. Thank You.
