I am so grateful for your time in making this video, especially like that you are using FCP! I found the last (talking head scene) example very helpful Love the RAW NR comparisons. I first saw this in Philip Bloom’s excellent “I can see pt2” video where he shared that it was essential he rec in Pro Res Raw, & do NR in post using neat video. (Rather than the in-camera NR) he actually stated that he wouldn’t have been able to complete the video properly using the in camera NR. Thanks again for your time!
Great job showing the differences of pro res raw and internal. Big difference for recovery. I just got a ninja V and wow im honestly a little blown away. great examples here i subscribed.cheers
Wow! That was excellent. I learnt a lot as I have until now, dismissed RAW (of any flavour) of being something that I needn't ever use. To say that I am now tempted is an understatement. I wouldn't use it for everything, but certainly I can see advantages for certain shooting scenarios. Thank you!!
only thing that is stupid is in the raw to log conversion there's only 6 cameras in it, and you can't even add to it as if those are the only cameras everyone use no arri, bm, red, zcam, no cinema cameras thats really stupid apple and fcpx is supposed to be for PRO's LMAO!!!!
This is one of the best videos I've seen in years! My mind is blown! I've been using FCPX for years, but I just recently bought the Ninja V for my a7siii and FX3. I'm working with ProRes RAW for the first time ever. And this video was extremely eye-opening for me. I had no idea you could adjust ISO and LUTs from the info window. And it turns out that you can also adjust temperature there, as well. Thank you so much for bringing this stuff to my attention. I'm subscribing now!
This was awesome. Thanks for the excellent breakdown and link to others. My only question is how do you post process Lens barrel distortion and chromatic aberration in post? All the research keeps pointing back to using the fisheye effect to make adjustment. Any tips on this?
Really awesome video. Thank you! I think ProRes Raw for pro productions, for RU-vid the A7Siii internal recording is more than enough with correct exposure and white balance.
So what is the rationale behind having to "activate" ProRes RAW and also DNx? I cannot for the life of me understand the reasoning for the process. I mean I did it, but... why??
My guess is, Apple and AVID have some sort of arrangement with Atomos to provide data on how many of their customers are using their respective codecs - but I don't know that for certain.
Ah this answered the question I was thinking of. If it mattered what iso I shot at it I can adjust it later. Thanks! Ps, for anyone interested, in the Sony a1 you can adjust the temperature settings.
I'm importing the prores raw clips into fcpx and it just keeps repeating rendering but I havent edited the clips yet. why doesnt it finish and the rendering dots go away?
Great video! Now if Apple would just put more effort into implementing their ProRes Raw for a wider variety of cameras (and making color balance adjustments possible in post).
@@rippleguys Yup that's why i started using resolve on the side. Sometimes I only develop BRAW and export PRORES files or sometimes I doing whole roundtrip with editing in FCPX (motionvfx plugins are the best :) )
Hello Mark, thank you so much for sharing your deep knowledge and help us cinematographers, editors and post specialists advance in our craft. Have a great year 2023!!
Thank you very much for your valuable video. Very interested in knowing what is the configuration of your Mac. processor, Graphic card, Ram memory? Thanks in advance. Very good job!
Can I keep the files on the SSD and edit them in final cut connecting directly to that ninja ssd so I dont have to use my laptop hard drive? (I keep running out of space)
Thank you for this! I’ve been trying to learn more about ProResRAW since getting a Sigma fp to go with my Ninja V I had been using on a Fuji X-T3. I’m setting the Ninja V to PQ monitoring, and using a PQ timeline in FCP for HDR output to RU-vid, but I can’t find any information about this workflow anywhere! Is there a chance Ripple Training could do a series for HDR workflows? Thanks again, love your training tutorials, and the RU-vid videos are a great free extra!
Boy I really wouldn't do that. Working in the PQ flavor of HDR really requires a proper HDR monitor with at least 1,000 nits - and while the Ninja V could theoretically do that, it's quite small for that purpose. Plus most folks won't see it on RU-vid in HDR anyway. I'd highly recommend you stick to SDR unless you are delivering to Netflix, Hulu, Apple, etc.
@@MotionTips Oh well, that explains why no one has PQ HDR workflow videos out. I’d argue that HDR for RU-vid is worthwhile, as there are quite a lot of OLED screen phones in the wild, and HDR looks pretty great on them. I’ve played around with HLG, but find the results look better from FCP with PQ. I’ll keep experimenting. Thank you for the information!
@@MotionTips A few thoughts. What about Apple's XDR display? It is very expensive but apparently a fraction of the price of previous reference monitors. Also would it make sense to grade in HDR and use the newish Duplicate Project As (Rec 709) feature to produce a 709 deliverable with some minor additional grading perhaps? Would that give some degree of future proofing if one is shooting ProRes Raw with the NinjaV anyway so that it would not be necessary to re-grade the HDR from scratch down the line?
@@mickspixels Yes, the XDR display is a great option. Normally you would first work in an HDR project (HLG or PQ) in an HDR library, then duplicate as Rec 709 like you say but then perform a "trim pass" on the Rec. 709 to make sure it's ok, using the HDR Tools effect as needed.
At 19:24 you say 1 hour SSD, instead of 1 terabyte SSD. Maybe you could Add a text over that. Love your videos. thank you. Just trying to help. Delete this comment if you want after you fix it. lol.
yeah, sometimes mistakes slip through. Unfortunately, RU-vid does not allow replacing a previously posted video and we would lose all our likes and comments.
I have a question I can't find an answer to. I love Prores Raw, but in FCPX, it seems you can't change the ISO within the clip once it has been set. This means my longer clips are forced to stay at one ISO despite the sunlight changing. Is there any way to tell FCPX to change the ISO within the same clip? It seems like a very restricting paramater.
Extremely useful, thank you putting together. In regards to comparing 10 bit vs 12 bit, is there much of a difference to justify the larger file sizes?
The files are only slightly larger than 10-bit ProRes, to me it's more a matter of the extra post-processing required. Really depends on your usage case.
Your camera only outputs a raw signal over HDMI. The Ninja V recorder then debayers the signal and turns it into a ProRes RAW file. You camera does not record or output ProRes RAW.
no good video on youtube about workflow with prores raw. affter this lesson my picture perfect. just purchesed codec from dji for ronin 4 g. Match better picture then sony fx 3 with s log 3.
So far, your tutorial is the best that I have watched on RU-vid, which demonstrates the difference between ProRes Raw and non-ProRes footage. Thank you. You have really educated me a lot on ProRes Raw.
Thanks Mark - this is my go to reference for Prores (waiting for my Ninja V to arrive) …wondering though - any thoughts on *Record Setting at * 100m 4:2:0 as opposed to 4:2:2? I had thought 4:2:2 was a “higher colour palate” (???) for lack of better words at this moment… any advise?
Thank you this great video. Please can you explain how do you spot and fix lens barrel distorition in post? And would this Fix need to be done to every RAW clip you shoot?
Hey Ripple ! Is there any way to use keyframes on the raw settings ? Like going from outside to inside and smoothly adjusting the WB ? I can't figure out the proper way to do that. Hint ?
You cannot keyframe any metadata settings. A common way to address this is to cut the clip at the point where you see the change, color grade the A side of the clip then the B side, then apply a really long dissolve so that the change from one color temp to another is not as noticeable.
Hi thank you very much, was looking for this! How do you, finaly export in FCP. What settings do you use? I put it now in apple tv in 4k, but that looks terrible?
If we try using the preinstalled noise reduction plugin from final cut x, will this be sufficient or do we really need a third party noise reduction plugin like from neat video for prores raw? Thanks!
BUT after "Adding HDR clip to SDR project," I notice that my prores raw media IS changed on the timeline but not in the browser; I have camera lut turned off and the correct slog conversion selected, but I am still seeing that the clips are brighter in the timeline than they are in the browser. Is this normal and expected? What settings are off?
@@MotionTips I agree. I need to know how much better w/r to All-Intra, I know if compressed xavc its a no brainer but with All-intra if it's as minuscule as tested by others or more
In FCP I can only see or change the iso range of the a7s3 ProRes RAW footage between ISO 50 - 25600.. Do I need to shoot at a certain iso from the start before being able to change the iso higher than 25600 in FCP..?
MotionTips 🤔 , i've seen videos of people shooting RAW up to the highest ISO.. ...I wonder how that would work if you shoot at higher ISO's in RAW, but only get that short ISO range in the post-settings...?
@@RaymondKPhotoVideography Ok I've tested this. If you shoot ISO between 50 and 25,600, that is the range you can select from in FCP. If you shoot higher, for example 102,400, you'll get that ISO, and then still the same range of 50 to 25,600. So no matter what ISO you shoot, you can only change it to an ISO within that 50 to 25,600 range.
@@MotionTips Okay Thank you for testing that out! I guess 50-25600 is a range most people use.. so they decided it that way.. Would still love for the ISO Range to be extended for post in the future.. it should be possible,.. But I'm happy that at least I'm still able to shoot at those higher ISO's in RAW.. getting the most out of the a7s3. And I guess If I need a bit more or a bit less exposure afterwards in Post I'll have to pull-down or push-up the footage through grading it a bit more... Again thank you for taking the time to test this out for me!
@@rippleguys Yeap, It was supposed to appear there. It's weird because the codec shows Apple ProRes Raw, Linear PCM. But nothing about ISO or Exposure, not even on extended Metadata view.
Great video.! Can the Ninja V record ProRes with older cameras? Like Canon 5D Mk3, 1Dx. I think these can do Clean HDMI out. But what does that mean? No mp4 like internal? What is your recommendation plugin for lens correction? Thx.
halnor777, check the camera compatibility list to see what cameras can output ProRes RAW to the Ninja V: www.atomos.com/compatible-cameras/?product=ninja-v. Not sure about lens correction in FCP - I have one for GoPro distortion from Alex4D but don't have anything for other specific lenses.
