Workshop 013 Starting the Workbench

The heart of any good shop lies upon and within the tabletop or bench. I have mentioned before how a goal of mine is to use this shop's main, vertical space as a place for active jobs only. That perhaps comes from filming so often in the past years. I have trained myself not to use the sd card in the camera as storage. It took a long time to build that skill of data management. Nowadays, I am usually very good about moving files to an external drive and freeing up the GoPro for capturing new video.

I’m currently rebuilding a shed that had some rotted wood. You inspired me to try. I have been battling mistakes the last few weeks and beating myself up. Wrong measurements. Can’t seem to cut a straight line. Building not being square. You showing your mistakes makes me not feel alone in my struggles. I’m on the hole stretch of my rebuild and it’s coming out really good. Not perfect, but good. I’m grateful for your videos Marty.

I love how this is coming along. This reminds me of your old videos, just pure passion and creativity. I've been watching your videos since i was 13yo. I subscribed for the kayak fishing but I stayed for all the projects. You always inspired me to continue on my own little projects and gave me new ideas for future projects. Now I'm 25 and in the process of building myself a cabin on a small rural property and just like back then you're still inspiring me to push through the tedious parts and chase my vision.

Loving the series. This is what I remember of your channel back in the day. Your approach to life really affected my day to day back in the early years and those influences have stuck with me all this time. Not going to lie, as you progressed through the business, the boat and then the trip around the world I kinda slipped away, but these past few weeks of progress and sharing your new surroundings have brought me back.

You are your own harshest critic! It’s fine! As someone who works as a handyman for a living, you’re constantly making compromises to get the job done, and once everything is in place, if you can’t see it, it’s perfect! Try to look at it from the perspective of a customer who only sees the final product - which is pretty much exact what they wanted.

Very cool video Also, love seeing the dogo's again, guess i got used to seeing them lots when you went on the loop. And also know how much your family means to you. Enjoying your workshop video, best just lay a bit of timber over that gap tho. We both know you won't cope with that ❤

I took my cordless Dewalt circular saw back to Lowe's. It's rated for a thin sheet of plywood. The 20volt Dewalt Atomic Max is rated for a 2x4.

Hi Marty. I’ll give you a tip when sawing. If you adjust the blade to just cut through the material it causes more friction because it’s a longer causing area which causes more amp usage there for lessening battery life. Raise the job and adjust to maximum depth on the saw giving you less friction and longer battery life.

LOL I have the same problem with old batteries. Cordless is nice, but sometimes a good ole corded skill saw is the ticket.

I only have one cordless tool - a Dewalt drill that I've had for over 20 years. Drill is great but It's on it's 3rd or 4th set of batteries. Having had to pay out $$ for the 1st replacement set, I invested in a decent generator, and only buy corded tools now.

Marty nice work ..when im using the dewalt saw those small batteries do not have enough juice for the saw..try using the bigger dewalt batteries..works better for me..thanks for all your tips man

Invest in a few4, or 5 amp batteries,Dewalt saws liketheir amperage, especially when ripping!A 1 by 4 to backup the plywood would give you the front clearance for clamping!

Fine job of the workbench Marty. Good idea to use those Torx bolts instead of screws. Wondering if, say, a 3" vertical strip of Ply against the sides would give you a 'back' to the bench plus enough overhang? 14:18 - What have you been taking pot shots at? !! Looking forward to more installments. Stay safe & well. 👍👍

Imagination, innovation, and adaptability are three words that describe why I started watching your channel years ago. I started losing interest when you decided on the big circuit in KonTiki and I'm glad to see your channel getting back to Imagination, innovation, and adaptability. Your attitude shows how much more rewarding your life has become getting back to what you enjoy.

I know you've been around saws for years, but I just wanted to comment that my cordless circular saw will not abide a dull blade. Gotta be a decent blade or it does just what yours did, kills all batteries dead. It doesn't have the power to overcome an old blade like a corded saw can. Thanks

16:39 I don't really know what "happened" (or rather what you did) there either, as neither of these almost-2" numbers add up to a full 2x4, but it appears that trying to deal with 'murica units in general and juggling all those literally "broken" numbers (½ / ¼ ¾ / ⅛ ⅜ ⅝ ⅞) in your head significantly contributed to the cause of the issue ... when taking measurements in "real" units (cm or mm) and calculating absolute numbers (like, for example, dollars and cents where a Dollar equals - as the name implies - simply 100 Cent and not 12 or 32 or 36 or some other arbitrary number) instead, such sort of "miraculous" surprises simply don't happen as long as you get some basic math right :]
