My Makita trim router (RT0700) doesn't support the standard Porter Cable style guide bushings. You can buy aftermarket sub-bases that do, but for less than $10AUD, a 6mm piece of acrylic will do the trick just as well.

My brushless version of that router is probably my favourite portable tool. Mine came with a few guides, but very limited. I like the mini-fence too. Good to know there is a simple way to get more options.
@TheWoodKnight
@TheWoodKnight 4 года назад
I think mine came with one guide... but I'm not sure if it was a QC issue or something else, but it was so loose that it was actually unusable, and it was Makita's own system so I couldn't (at the time) find any more anyway :/

🤣🤣hahahahahaha🤣🤣 When you removed the protective paper from the acrylic, I saw there was more paper underneath, and in that split second thought aww $hi+ some cheeky bugger put 2 layers on, then I realised it's bloody see through and was the paper on the other side! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Neat homemade addition, mate. 👍🏽

When I was drilling it, I constantly thought I was off by about 5mm because of parallax issues. Dang clear stuff messing with our brains!

Nice work, I actually have made several router base plates but when I needed one that fit a bushing somehow it didn't occur to me that I could make one for THAT, too. Nice work, very approachable project.

Nice video, Paul! Maybe glue 2 thin strips on the wood alongside the acrylic? That would keep it from twisting and force it to slide in a straight line only.
@TheWoodKnight
@TheWoodKnight 4 года назад
You're right, that'd stop twist...but the twisting *can* be advantageous in some cases! Because the orientation of the router/bit doesn't matter (round cutter doesn't have a "square" alignment when cutting), twisting can act as a micro adjustment by just loosening one of the two lock knobs. Of course...if it glides smoothly in a straight line that would probably provide the same micro adjustment, hah

Can't you just use the 321492 ? I just can't seem to figure out how it mounts, and there's no video or guide that shows how it's done.

Great video mate, any chance you could link to the counter sink bits you mentioned, not seeing much on Aussie ebay, thanks
@TheWoodKnight
@TheWoodKnight 4 года назад
Ah, looks like all the cheap-chinese-importers are calling them 'chamfer counter sinks'. www.ebay.com.au/itm/4pcs-Chamfer-Countersink-Deburring-Drill-Bit-Set-Crosshole-Cutting-Metal-Tool-GU/401746005173?epid=18015933782&hash=item5d89ed8cb5:g:~JMAAOSwT4lWTww8

Could you please tell me what is the dia of the hole in the plunge base. I mean can we use a profiling bit of dia 43 mm with it ?

Which bushings do you use or recommend? The bushings that came with my rt0700 didn't convince me... Nice little project, thanks! 👍
@TheWoodKnight
@TheWoodKnight 3 года назад
Honestly, I think when looking at the brass/portercable bushings, they're all mostly the same. My big Bosch router has the bosch specific bushings and they're "unique" but not better than the brass ones. The one I have is the generic "8 piece brass bushing" set that comes with two brass lock nuts, in a plastic case. At least 5 different brands sell it on Amazon, they alll look the same. ie amzn.to/3eiVEQ8 (not a specific recommendation as I haven't purchased that one, but looks identical to the kit I have!)

I know this is an old video, but just what I am looking for. Please can you tell me if plans are still available for this ? I can't seem to find them via the link in the Video description? Many thanks in advance 😁
@TheWoodKnight

You don't need plans for it - measure and mark directly from the router itself

I have just bought one of these routers. A circular piece of metal came with it which is referred to as the guide bush adaptor. I was looking for a video which would explain how to attach this part and this one came up. There doesn't seem to be any explanation video in existence as to how to attach this part, which makes me wonder is this a new addition which would make what this guy is suggesting no longer necessary?
@TheWoodKnight

Different locations sell different packages. Mine came with a bushing that fit the fixed base, but not the plunge. At the time i purchased my router, the plunge base wasn't an option.
@chrisohanlon69

@@TheWoodKnight thank you I'm in England bought the basic package cordless. I see, thanks for your reply, I can see you have made a great mod in this video. I don't have the plunge base yet so I guess I can just use what I've got once I learn how to attach it.

you need to use a clock gauge on your drill set up as the bits are wobbling. Something is not set up correctly. Good info otherwise. Thanks
