@@brokeandtired Damn handy in the western desert against Pzkpfw IIIs and early ivs too. But it's clumsy use of the 75mm and height always seemed to be a transition tank not to be taken too seriously, for me anyway. This series has shown the degree of thought and engineering that actually went into it.

@@awf6554 Well against the Japanese tanks the 37mm was still effective frontally, in the tank on tank engagements, the Grant wiped the floor with Japanese tanks. Up until 1945 it was still effective in the Far East and its 75mm made a great pillbox bunker cracker.

we even had to wear a cvc tanker's helmet on the m60. everything inside was metal, and didn't move. driving the tank cross country, you did. even if you were hanging on with the minimum of three points of contact. trust me, it hurt if you cracked your head on the side of the turret even with a cvc on.

I don't presume to know how to install the 37 mm gun shield into it's mantlet but it seems to me, if you had the mantlet horizontal and drop your gun shield down, that would be easier to lower it instead of fighting the angle of an almost verticle mantlet.

You guys are doing a great job. It shows how we've lost our way in designing, though. In those days rugged, simple, and serviceable were the keys. That's what makes restoration like this possible. Today, I wouldn't be surprised to find a car where you have to take off a tire to replace a spark plug. We should get in touch with a few more basic things. Like build a car from a mechanics viewpoint. If he can work on it without wishing the engineer would die in a crash and burn situation, you're getting better! Hehehe

The bit were someone claimed American tank crews had to wear helmets,British crews wore berets in American tanks untill someone compared casualty rates of British and American crews in shermans and noticed that the pommes had much higher casualty rates mostly head injuries, word soon came down to ditch the berets and start wearing helmets and head injuries came down even in British tanks.

Comparison of post war statistics between US and UK for head injuries in tank crewmen indicate that wearing helmets in the tank was a very good idea. The Chieftain discussed that in one of his Sherman videos a few years ago. Another statistic is that a lot of tank crew injuries occurred outside of the tank after bailing out. Also, does the Australian government have any sort of licensing that allows operable guns? The US has the NFA (National Firearms Act) that provides for that if you pay a big license fee and pass security checks with, I think, requirements of the weapon in question being from before a certain date. There are a couple of places in the southwest that have tanks that customers can drive and actually shoot. I know of an M3 Stewart up here in the northwest that has a working 37mm main gun.

The barrel is blocked front and back, ammunition hasn't been made for this gun for 65 years but a proper breach assembly must be disabled to install it. If I had one in my garage you wouldn't get it. Australia has gone mad about guns for some reason and as beautiful is your work is it just isn't authentic. I am surprised they let you build tanks at all.
