We have a tractor with a loader but no pallet forks, we also have this Cub Cadet string trimmer. It’s a good idea to try out mounting the trimmer to the forks but couldn’t a mower be mounted on the back or middle of the tractor to mow such a large area? We have an orchard and are forever trying to work out ways to mow grass around trees. There are tractor mounted trimmer systems which are expensive and are similar to your solution. I think we will have to go for the expensive system because they can spring back when they hit a tree. Thanks for posting this.
Thank you so much for the question. The ideal attachment for that job is a rotary brush cutter or a flail mower. Both have resilience if you hit a rock or large stick, etc. I don't own one, so I just tried coming up with an idea for what I have. It worked pretty well, but not great. I ended up buying Grass Gator blades for my string trimmer. Those work very well. 😁👍
Try replacing the cutting string with a table saw blade as large as you can find. Don't buy a new one since repair shops have them in abundance for free. This becomes a miracle cutting mechanism. With it's success, you'll want to fabricate a mount to the forks that slides on from the front but has a rigid frame. Remove the mower handle, wheels, and relocate the controls. I used it to mow areas like yours along with under my 4 rail fencing. It becomes a "have to have" tool for efficiency.
Yeah, I've seen my father do this before on a carry type trimmer. It worked GREAT until I cut down a fence post accidentally. Now, if the trimmer had a halo ring on it. The saw blade couldn't get THAT close.
Im going to build one of those but have like 5 heads and run it off the pto. I live in Kalifornia and the grass is too dry to run with a brush hog fue to fire danger. Our only solution is string trimming.
I don't think I like the idea of removing the wheels and push handle because I still want to be able to use it as originally intended. But I do think a halo ring around the head to keep from replacing string so often. Where does one find the plastic coated metal string?
I have been wanting to put a wheel that over hangs the front of the trimmer and that would work for you as well. BUT not rain in so. California and not even weeds to trim this year. Now you are using gas and diesel to do the job kinda costly
Good point. If I could rig an electric trimmer it would save some fuel. Still, I run the Kubota at a very low rpm so it saves diesel compared to running the pto. We'll see?
What part of Kommiforniastan? I live in the Sierra Nevada foothills. Fire danger is so sketch. I'm going to build something like this that attaches to the 3point/pto with like 5 heads and some pullys/belts. All it takes is a spark from a rokk. And weed eating akers by hand with a Stihl takes for ever.
