In this episode, George, Dan and Ian inspect the William Booth II double bass and start to make a plan of the work that will need to be done. When planning the restoration, care must be taken to see how the back and front fit to the ribs, marking with a chinagraph pencil any areas that will need attention. Dan marks these areas before Ian removes the neck, making the double bass easier to move around and take apart.
Next, the front and back plates are carefully removed with a sharp knife so that work can begin on the four elements of the instrument. When restoring an instrument, work is completed on the front, back, ribs and scroll before combining the elements to make a complete double bass. You will see on the upper back by the button that there is a poorly fitted unoriginal piece of ebony with white glue holding it on. This will be removed and replaced with some well-matched wood.

Thank you, yes in these old double basses you can find even just a single back brace :-)

Moving the neck further away from the body and raising the height of the bridge allowed them to add a 5th string to the Bass and it gives the instrument more notes you can play.

Woooo as a bass player watching this is sort of like watching somoene do open heart surgery on your signifant other! Sort of realy intense ... you know your saving it's life but - heck you have to do that!!!! :-) PS what about that finger board! Was it a 5 string or some sort of converted 3 string thing? As always amazing to see what you people get up to... fantastic work. Thanks Steve

Glad you enjoyed it! Don't worry it turns out beautifully in the end! It was a very strange the way that they had converted it to five strings, never seen it done like that before!

@@ThomasGeorgeViolinMakers I guess they did it in a way that's akin to how you actually did it. Raising the bridge and moving the neck further away from the body relieves tension from the top.

Yes the neck was very unusual, it was four strings and they converted it to five strings in a very strange way. You will see in the course of the videos that we make a really nice new neck :-)
