THEY CUT IT UP?! 😢 that sucks. Wish someone with a ton of money and nothing to spend it on had bought it and kept it whole and put it on display for all to see and admire. This stone should belong to everyone on earth. Its literally one of the most beautiful things made by mother earth and forces of nature. We hear the term national treasure but this is well was a world treasure. All the cuts that they made with it could have cut from other smaller diamonds but this piece of crystalized carbon was a priceless artifact of earth and my opinion is it shouldn't have been cut or altered in any way. It should have been put in a museum.

A lot of extraordinary interesting physics and chemistry going unremarked on here. The laser is clearly a high power, frequency doubled Nd:YAG system - that neon green color is just unmistakable. But it seems they are using a thin laminar jet of water as a waveguide for the beam, just like a fiber optic! That's very clever! Also the diamond looks totally black on the cut surfaces, why? It's become graphitized - the diamond allotrope of carbon is only metastable, graphite is much more stable and is what the molecular structure naturally reverts to in high heat. Finally, lasers are by definition just a single color, green here, so why does the beam appear bright cherry RED in some shots like at 1:05? You're seeing the Stokes shifted Raman scattering effect in water! The beam is behind a safety plastic window that blocks the main 532nm green beam and so you can see the red scattered light coming directly from the symmetric and asymmetric stretching modes of the O-H bonds in the molecules themselves! Wow, I've never seen that directly before!

Unc1eLuke Not necessarily, as a general rule; size goes up, clarity goes down. This diamond being VVS and over 300 carats it would be the highest clarity for its size but not in general. And by its size I don’t mean diamonds of this size cannot be flawless but we have never found one so this would be the highest grade.

That, and the color of the rough stone... it had a yellowish tint and the asking price was therefore too high to take the risk of having a yellowish stone all through. In hindsight, we did not shy away from cutting it ;) it was a challenge, very much so, but we knew it was doable to cut it...

"Lesedi la rona" is the languages Sotho or Tswana for "our light". This diamond must come from either South Africa or Botswana. Probably the former.
