If you ever get a chance to spend some time on a replica sailing ship, do it. It is definitely worth the time and effort.

@bustercrabbe8447 That's awesome, I read the HMS Rose was sold to the 20C. Fox studios, then modified and used for the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. Now you can say, you sailed on the same ship as Captain Jack Sparrow ;)

"Powered ONLY by the tide and wind" ....and propellers powered by diesel engines. Go to their website. An amazing ship and a truly unique experience for all involved, but please don't exaggerate the story.

This because it is a legal requirement, these days. Also, of course, to run generators and produce onboard power.

@@mooneyes2k478 Absolutely! My comment wasnt about how I was disappointed that it has engines (I also assume they have radios, refrigerators and flush toilets). My comment was directed at the author whos stated clearly that the ship is powered ONLY by the wind, which is clearly untrue and even a cursory read of their website reveals that. So clearly just lazy "journalism".

@@pauldiamond9219 Oh, absolutely. Of course, they're "supposed" to only use the engines for docking and emergencies, but you know...

Never even thought they still were sea worthy… 💀

If it were an actual ship from that era, then yes it wouldn't be sea worthy by modern regulations. But it is a modern replica ship with plenty of alterations in its design to make it sea worthy. The most externally visible feature of these modern tools is the big radar dome on the aft mast. Seen clearly at 0:38 One can also note the modern life boats hidden in plain sight at: 0:30 The less visible things are the inner workings. The ship does mainly sail, it is the whole point of the vessel. But it does also have two 550 hp diesel engines for propulsion. And enough electrical generation to facilitate the needs of a smaller town. (360 kW worth that is) Since powering things like pumps, navigation equipment, cooking, water treatment, lighting, charging the crew's phones and such, among other needs do exist. Now, altering the design for these modern requirements is however simple. Trading ships like these were historically carrying a lot of cargo, most of the internal volume were just for this cargo. Something the modern replica ship doesn't partake in. So all that cargo space is suddenly "empty", ample room for machinery, better cooking facilities, water treatment, etc. However, historically these ships were usually maned by about twice as many people. And this replica ship doesn't really have much to replace the manual labor of rigging. No, a powered capstan isn't really a thing onboard. (they do have one for the anchor though.) So it is likely more manually intensive to work onboard than the original ship. Though, at the end of the day, I guess the crews most enjoyable design alteration is the added vertical clearance on all decks. Now, 190 cm isn't much, but the original ship this is a replica off were a fair bit more cramped.
