This video gave me ambitions to make computer games when I was a kid. Still remember the day that I keep watching this over and over again while making games. Ten years later, I'm a game developer. Now I'm back to this masterpiece again. Good old days feelings strike me really hard with this, such a nostalgic feel. Without this, I don't even know what my life will look like. Thanks for such a great and inspiring video!

This video was so intriquing, i was confused for the most of it the first time i watched the video, i didnt quite grasp the full concept of the video. To me the woman that he loves dearly is in the hospital, and she seems to be in a coma. So he decided to make her a wold that she can live in, he made a place for her, a little town, that im assuming they have been before and she loved becuase of how specific it was. The video most would say was that he soley did what he did for his loved one, but you see how much happiness and joy that seeing her move around happily and freely. And the fact that he stayed hidden makes one wonder more about why she is in a coma, and why he didnt show himself, maybe he was afraid she wouldnt remember him or any of the pictures that they showed. He created a world out of love. This in a way is the most out there video we have watched for our MOOC but at the same time, the raw emotions was the realist that one could connect with. Their love is much like the flower, he stands alone, admiring it, much like she did to the flower itself in the video.

Ahhh but you're assuming a man sitting at a desk with a mouse coding this reality by hand in real time. The timer is, indeed, in real time but when he's working he's working at the speed of thought as he's mentally directly interfaced with the computer system. The productivity a person could experience with that kind of interface must be astronomical.

Now in 2024 it seems a bit slow. He could have done this a lot faster with AI. Starting with simple wireframes, prompting, then doing in-paintings to adjust things, etc.

#edcmooc - who did he do this for? Himself, or her? Did she actually consciously experience it? Also, I think this video shows us as entirely in charge of technology: we are using it for our own benefit, and it is responding correctly. We are the manipulators and masters. Using tools has been part of being human since we first started flint, and this is no different. I see no danger of us losing what it means to "be human" in this video.

I remember watching this video in 2012, i think it wat the late days of cgsociety. I was in a job that I don't like to do, I was trying to create my personal designs as much as my job allows to, and I wanted to do more... finally 3 years after I quit my job and freed myself to do what I want. It was (and "is" mostly still) the most inspiring thing in my CG life in the matter of env. design and story telling. this is the upmost thing that ahead of its time. Thanks for this Bruce Branit. You've made my CG life much valuable that it can ever be. Really honor for me to know this creation of yours...

Easily one of my favorites. From a first person perspective, if I were to be 'within the body and looking through the eyes' of the man outlined in this video, this is what I would imagine it's like to 'program' a holodeck, or to be a holoprogrammer. A 'new form' of story telling. This is sincerely what I want to do for a living, and this video is a huge inspiration for that.

@Sylar482 The thing about it is that not just anybody can do such a thing! And he does it so selflessly! The world he built was an artistic masterpiece, and, after a short time, it was thrown away, and all that was left was a single flower that he somehow brought back to this world. No one else got to share the world builder's gift, and that is the true tragedy of the movie. Yet, the world builder himself doesn't even notice! How completely tragic!

John Jainschigg I often feel frustrated that machinama capture of SL events don't capture the subjective inworld experience.
@JohnJainschigg
@JohnJainschigg 10 лет назад
Linda Rogers ... I agree. Sadly (or, I guess, happily, depending on how you look at it) the human mind is amazing at structuring and enriching the logical, aesthetic and emotional perception of actions in which one participates. So I remember events and situations in SL much more richly, coherently and meaningfully than any single-camera P.O.V. could capture, even when there's an attempt at 'cinematography' in editing. Sometimes, this even affects memory of facts (e.g., someone will have typed something to me, and I'll remember them as having 'said' it). Often, by comparison with the remembered experience, the video of that experience looks crude, flat, stylized and uninteresting. This happens in other VWs as well -- Warcraft, for example. I'll remember flying a dragon-mount over some ineffably-majestic alpine sunrise scene, then see the same place on video and it will look like a child's crayon drawing. I think there's actually something _physical_ going on with this phenomenon. That is: it's not just the mind 'making up a story.' Rather, it's that, in dynamic participation, we perceive more than just the pixels, but capture a gestalt of the 3D artist's intention, and use that in processing the scene: in effect, inflecting the 'internal render.'
@LindaRogersTO
@LindaRogersTO 10 лет назад
John Jainschigg I absolutely agree on the memory thing. There are certain SL experiences that regularly find their way into my dreams. For example one time I tried to swim to an island that turned out to be one of those off-sim illusion things you couldn't really get to. I dream about swimming with that island out of reach a lot. Also when reflections were new, swimming with a friend and seeing the reflections and distortions above me on the water surface. Oh... and flying my balloon in Caledon!
